“...so, I was telling Lee about it, and then George here walked in and...Lavender?”

Hermione, who had been  focused on the book in her lap, whipped around to focus back at Ron--her cheeks blazing, her fingers moving (apparently involuntarily) toward her wand.  Ron might have been scared if he'd not been staring at the front door slack jawed, possibly wondering if this was some sort of dream (or nightmare, more like)

Ginny, who’d been watching the door for her second favorite (and long absent) older brother, tried unsuccessfully to grasp Hermione’s hand and stop the tirade that everyone in the room knew bloody well was imminent, resorted to elbowing Hermione hard in the shoulder.

Startled, Hermione’s attention was pulled away from her exasperation at Ron and toward the front door. There was a moment of silence as her mouth formed a perfect ‘O’

“Lavender?” she finally screeched, jumping to her feet. The younger members of the family braced themselves for the confrontation, and the tension was so think it might have been cut with a knife.

Imagine their shock when Hermione instead launched herself at Lavender, embracing her like a long lost sister.

“Where have you been? I’ve been looking for ages!’

“Uh...er...Italy?”

"Do you know this girl, Hermione?"  Molly asked.

"I certainly ought to--we shared a room for seven years. Well, six, actually--the last one I shared with Harry and Ron, but..Oh, my goodness, Lavender, I’ve been so worried! I tried getting your address  from Parvati but she wouldn’t say a word!  I even wrote your mum, but...”

“Oh so you’re English, then?"  Molly interrupted.   "I thought...well, never mind what I thought...” Here Molly looked at Fleur almost apologetically. “How lovely! A Gryffindor, then? And you’d have been in our Ronnie’s year? Well, you’ve certainly come to the right place. I’m sure we’re all just thrilled to have you here.”

“Not just a Gryffindor, Mrs Weasley...”

“Molly, Harry,” Mrs. Weasley said with a manufactured sigh. “Why you’re practically family...”

“Anyway, Mum,” Harry said, blushing a bit. . “She was one of the first to sign up for Dumbledore's Army. I kept the paper. She was the first after...well, one of the first non-Weasley to sign. After Neville, I mean.”

“Really?” Arthur said, and shook Lavender’s hand enthusiastically.

“Mum still hasn’t forgiven us for breaking the rules,” George said. “But she’s secretly proud of us, I can tell,” he added.

“Hmph," Molly said, making at attempt at a stern look, but she couldn’t disguise the twinkle in her eyes as she turned from George to Lavender.

Ginny, who'd been hanging off to the side, added, “Not only that, Mum, you should have seen her that last year of the war. She pestered Madame Pomfrey to help her learn healing charms, and she took care of us, fixing our wounds, and Neville said she was the one who made sure the Room of Requirement didn’t smell like a Quidditch changing room. Plus, she came up with a way to save Parvati's sister when the Carrows got her. She was brilliant.”

Lavender turned toward Ginny, looking as if she was ready to burst into tears. “It's nothing.  Really, I...”

“She killed Alecto Carrow, too,” Ron said quietly, meeting her eyes for the first time since she walked in the room.

Molly gasped and turned toward Lavender questioningly as Hermione whispered furiously at Ron and elbowed him.

“What? It’s not as if Mum won’t approve--he tortured children, for heaven’s sake! She’d have liked to kill him herself if Lavender hadn’t beat her to it.”

Hermione elbowed him again, even harder this time.

Ron leaned a bit closer to Lavender. “She killed Bellatrix Lestrange, Mum did. Wish I could've had at her, but we’re all really proud of Mum.  I got Greyback, but I needed Neville's help.”

Lavender tried to say something, but all that came out was a mildly hysterical giggle.

Charlie took a step closer and put his arm around Lavender. Molly’s smile had grown considerably warmer as she hung up Lavender’s coat on Fred's empty hook.

"I sink our Char-lee has excellent taste in women," Fleur said, stepping forward to kiss Lavender lightly on the cheek. "Zis is Victoire,” she said, and smiled in approval as Lavender’s expression of barely controlled panic melted into a smile the baby was unable to resist.

“What a beautiful baby,” she said, leaning affectionately towards Charlie and tugging at his scarf. “I’ve always had a weakness for strawberry blondes."

Fleur, smiling proudly, thrust the baby in Lavender’s arms, and Lavender settled her on her hips in an unconscious maternal gesture. “Hello, gorgeous,” she said, and beeped Victoire's nose, sending her into paroxysms of giggles.

“And she taught our Ronnie here how to snog,” George added with a sly smile, apparently unable to stomach being outside the center of attention.  Half the room sighed in exasperation.  "George!!!” several people hissed.

Charlie stepped forward and kissed Lavender’s cheek. “Mere pactice for the real thing,” he said. “For both of you. And now,” he added, pulling off his frock coat. “Where’s the food I was promised? I’m fucking famished!”

“Language, Charles,” Molly admonished, placing her arm lightly on Lavender's shoulder before affectionatley caressing her granddaughter’s cheek. “Not that you deserve it, but I’ve made your favorite lamb stew. I suppose I’ll have to give your Lavender the recipe.”

Awkwardness averted, the entire family turned and walked toward the kitchen table in pairs of two. Just as the majority of them walked through the swinging doors, Ron stopped short in his tracks. “Uh...Charlie? What the fuck is that on your neck?”

Once again, Charlie laughed.
