“She’s gone,” Luna said, and George felt the pain in her voice as if he had been stabbed in the heart.

I know,” he said, pulling her onto his lap, kissing the top of her head.  She tucked her face into his neck, and he felt a lone tear making a slow journey from her face down the length of his neck and chest.

“She’ll be fine,” he said, slipping a warm hand under her peasant blouse, tracing the curve of her spine, toying with the clasp of her bra.

“What if she’s lonely?” Luna asked, remembering her first night at Hogwarts, the fear that she’d never make friends-the fear that turned out to be not without merit.

“She has Freddie,” George said.  “She’ll never feel lonely.”

“They could get separated in the Sorting Ceremony,” Luna pointed out.

George snorted.  “Not bloody likely.”

“Still, they’ll be separated at night…Girls can be cruel,” Luna said, remembering the girls in her dorm room who’d looked at her mother’s handmade jewelry and sneered.

“She’s special,” George said.  “Anyone with eyes can see that.”

“Sometimes special comes across as…loony,” Luna countered.

“She has cousins, and more new ones will arrive every year,”  George reminded her, tightening his arms around her.

“But what if they think her experiments are odd?”  Luna asked, meeting George’s eyes with large, misty, fear-filled ones.

Her professors will encourage her,” George said firmly.

Luna smiled.  “Neville will look out for her.”

“Yes,” George replied.  “He won’t let her be overlooked.”

“And she has Freddie,” Luna said, as if his name had never been brought up.

“She has Freddie,” George agreed.

Luna shifted on his lap, turning to straddle him.  “Whatever are we going to do with the rest of the year?” she asked.

George slipped his hands under her blouse, circling her nipples with his thumbs.  “Dunno.  Reckon we’ll think of something.”

Luna’s answering smile was breathtaking, and she had a bit of a wicked gleam in her eyes, too.  “Did you know that a woman doesn’t reach her sexual peak until her thirties?”  She kissed him, tightening her thighs against his hips.

“Did you read that in the Quibbler?” he asked.

“Oh, no,” she said dreamily.   “Your mother mentioned it years ago.  I always did like her.”

“I think Mum was trying to make sure you didn’t give up on me,” George replied, and for a moment, he could swear he heard his mother’s belly laugh, the one that only he and Fred could wrest out of her, somewhere off in the distance.

He kissed her again, reminding himself how close he’d come to buggering up the whole thing after the war.

“I love you, Luna,” he said.

“Who wouldn’t love you, George?” she replied.
