Just passing through with two quick things. First, Hurricane Irene is "only" a category 1 hurricane -- but moving very slowly, with hurricane force winds that are likely to last for up to a full day and strong storm surges. If your area goes under any kind of special advisory or evacuation order, take heed and do what it says; the emergency ( Read more... )

Mark, why doesn't your tag say linguistics?
Emily, I'd go gaga over any new info on the Proto-Indo European Language or a current graph of PIE.

why, I was afraid "linguistics" would confuse people who forgot to sign in before they replied! ;-) Also, I've developed a bad habit of not creating any new tags, for no good reason I can think of. Gotta work on that ...

If a hurricane doesn't die down before it reaches Long Island, they always get hit hard because it's sticking out in the path of the storm. LI'ers know what they're doing, we've been through worse.

I know, I've studied up on it ... and also, I know a few people on Long Island. But while LJ'ers might know what they're doing, I'm not so relaxed about the rest of humanity!

from what I have seen from my family on LI there is a nice sense of community going on down there. During Hurricane prep and all the people who live near my mother's boat were checking up on the lines and making sure it was safe. Lots of people have opened up their homes and shared supplies.

That whole area is dealing with lack of electric now, lots of sections of the tri state area are being told it will be a week to regain power.

Up here in NB, I am without power, no clue how long it will take to restore. I'm hoping not a week

It's starting rain now, so far the winds aren't bad but I too feel like this storm is going to be bad. It feels like we are just sitting around waiting for the impending doom. We live in a high elevation area and we are quite a few miles from the ocean, but it is still scary.

That storm was just as big around as Katrina, so anyone would have reason to be worried. Luckily it wasn't so powerful when it made landfall, but it still packed quite a wallop. I hope you have electricity now!
