on Facebook now

Yup, I'm on Facebook -- Emily set the account up for me yesterday. I'm primarily going to use it as a tool in promoting my writing, which I hope to have good, promotable news about sometime this year. I suppose I should go ahead and post my columns there too, shouldn't I? That'll give me something to talk about in between novel submissions. I'm ( Read more... )

:) It's a teacher thing. I had my real name on there but this year I changed it because a friend of mine had her account hacked by a 12 year old and the kid's mom printed out photos of her drinking (having 1 beer at a baseball game - nothing bad) sent them to the school and demanded my friend be fired. She did not lose her job but it shook her up and the advice from her principal was to just use a different name on Facebook, so I do that.

Sounds like a wise precaution. Still, I can't help wondering: What business is it of that mom that your friend had a beer while she wasn't at work? Why isn't it the mother getting in trouble, for not controlling her 12 year old and actually supporting the behavior of hacking into other people's accounts? That's way worst than having a beer at a baseball game, which as I understand it is something almost all sports goers do. Sounds like mom had an ax to grind.

Oh the mom sent it in anonymously so the school had no idea who it was. Clearly there are issues there. Her kid probably didn't get an A so she was mad or something along those lines. The school did not fire my friend. But for her it was a really crappy experience and shook her up. She had no idea if it was a student from the previous year or one of her kids who she was still teaching and that's just an icky feeling. Also yes, that kid had no business being on Facebook and if the kid/parent was known I think that question would have come up. The site is for people 16+ years old. Why did the mom let him go on it? Sounded like bad parenting and now the mom's trying to blame teachers for the fact her kid is a brat.

that's what I was thinking -- revenge for her little precious not getting special treatment. Also, I'd have completely disregarded it if the source was anonymous; if a person doesn't have the intestinal fortitude to face the person they're accusing, screw 'em.
