Another thing to consider is that sometimes the way a monitor displays color really varies, so that icons that look really wonderful on one screen can look weird on another. So I wonder if that's an issue we have going on here!

The "first" icon is very impressive, then--I really thought you added the text afterward, it's so nice and clear!

I like "smile" too, and I agree that it works nicely with two people in there! I actually have this weird desire to try shifting the image to the left, so that we only see a bit of the important smile and see a bit more of the man looking at the smile? Almost teasing the viewer to want to see more of the main, focus-smile. I'm not sure it would work, but it's the way I instinctively want to play with the picture.

As for the "past" icon, you're dealing with something I have major problems doing--distinguishing two small people against a large landscape. Here's an icon by orangelusik that I think does it very well (and I'm constantly trying to imitate, because that's how I learn to make better icons):

As far as I can tell the icon works so well because the coloring focuses the attention in the correct places...that said, I have no idea what coloring this required!

I like the alternative "past" icon a lot. Maybe I'm weird, but I tend to like icons with a lot of empty space.

Also, that third icon in "colour" is totally wonderful-- I like way you extended the shadows, and only used pink but managed to use multiple tones of the color.

I enjoy the mega-rambling! I sort of over-think things in my world, including icons, so it's really fun to talk through all these concepts with you!

Yeah. It can also be a matter of taste too. Occasionally when gifted with icons or banners I've had to tweak them a little myself (nothing that you've made for me though) to get them looking the way I like. Whether it's because they showed up differently on my monitor or because I preferred them a little brighter/sharper/etc I don't know. It definitely is interesting though.

A little something like this maybe.

Though I'm not sure if I like these any better than the one I already had. (I also don't like them any worse, they're just different.)

That is a gorgeous icon. I did play with the colouring quite a bit in that icon but just couldn't get it to look exactly the way I wanted it to.

I originally intended for the icon with the glasses to be my 'first' icon, as it's one of the first images that appears in the opening titles, even if it did seem like an image that came 'after' rather than 'before'. I was so pleased with my second idea (the "Mrs. Peel. We're needed.") that I went with that one instead.

Also a couple more alternatives from those opening titles.

I'm so glad you like that 3rd 'colour' icon. It was easily my favourite icon (and possible the best) of the ones I made this time around, even if I didn't use it for the voting. I do love the way the shadowing worked out, but thought maybe it was a little too pink to fit in with the rest of my 'colours' set. I think I'll have to add it to my userpics. :D

The second is what I was thinking about, but, yeah, I'm not sure it worked all that well. So much of icon-making, for me at least, is messing around (and then sometimes deciding I liked the first option best)! : )

I like the second of the two alternatives--the coloring is so neat, with the blue and the long shadows!

Yeah. That's where most of the fun lies for me too. Just taking any image and seeing what you can get out of it. :)

Okay, also, just because I'm thinking about posting chapter 2 tonight, and I DID finish chapter 4 (yay!) I was wondering if you received/got a chance to read chapter 3 of my fic yet?

Congratulations on finishing chapter 4. I did hear that it was giving you some trouble. Chapter 3 beta is on its way. :)
