When I was a child I lived for several years in a tiny town -- population 750 -- way out in the country. It had a courthouse square, and a huge red brick courthouse with hitching posts and horse troughs all the way around; people still came to town on Saturday night for the band concert in horse-pulled wagons ( Read more... )

I had a college roommate from Romania, and he said that his neighborhood economy as a child was based on hamsters and lizards.
