Man, it's a treat when he scores because it doesn't happen that often! And what about that challenge? Poor thing... I've read reports that he may not be able to play the next game against Scotland because of it.

I just read on Una's Con la Roja blog that he is the second highest scorer during the VDB era! Only David Villa has scored more than him!!! (He passed Fernando Torres with his goal on Friday.) He's the unexpected threat. Maybe that's why they're always after him in international matches?

This trivia surprised me quite a bit, tbh. His last goal in an official game was in the Confed Cup 2009.
Yeah, he seems like the unexpected threat, when you see him going unmarked like before his goal on Friday. I got no clue how many of his international goals were free kicks and penalties though, which aren't exactly of the unexpected kind. It also shows how reliant Spain are on Villa's goal scoring prowess.

He more or less sneaks up on you with that. And I think international friendlies would count in goalscoring, because Spain played against the United States in the summer, and Xabi scored against them (It was a penalty, if I remember correctly.)

it was in the game against Venezuela if I remember right. I just mentioned that because goals in official games are more important, imho.

Just looked it up - you're right! ;) Thanks for the correction!

No, you have a point. I was just answering the comment after yours. But yeah, I read that on Una's blog, too.

Yeah, they definitely rely on Villa. I read somewhere this morning -- was it Con la Roja as well? -- that Torres has the lowest average of goals per minute of any Spanish forward ever.

Also, I'm starting to really hate international breaks. Chori's out (did you see his swollen face?), Sergio is likely out, Xabi is luckily back in training (I really hope VDB lets him rest Tuesday), and Ozil is nursing a problem with his Achilles tendon. Aaaah!

yikes.
I hate this break too. There are way too many injuries, especially considering that Germany and Spain were already qualified anyway. Poor Chori and his swollen face. I read somewhere that he might be out for a longer time, but I hope that was just a worst case scenario. He could play with a mask if they run out of defenders. :P

When I read about his injury, my immediate reaction was, "Not the face!!!!"
