Singh, Nalini - Angel's Blood

Sadly, this is one of the many books subject to extreme whitewashing; rachelmanija saw the cover and asked, "Is the heroine albino?" (The white hair and pale eyes are canonical, but the main character is half-Moroccan and should have "dark gold" skin. And yes, some of it is the lighting for the face, but it's still pretty extreme ( Read more... )

>In this world, angels rule the world and make... er, sorry, Make... vampires. <

:blinks: I did not see the end of that sentence coming. Huh.

I know! I mean, I was already weirded out by the angel/demon/vampire collision in Meljean Brooks' books, but I really was not expecting angels to make vampires.

... sadly, so far, there is no Lucifer in the series, much less an icy cold female one, but one can always hope!

"Angel Gift Certificate" is clearly a manga, and probably not even a good one.

I found this one slow going at the beginning--a bit infodumpy--but was interested enough, and enough of a Singh fan, to keep on.

A thing I liked was that Elena had a female best friend in her job, rather than the usual woman isolated among fun-totin' men.

A thing I didn't like was the part where Raphael used magic and then his emotions went away for a time--it felt like using a crowbar to engineer a scene in which he is cold and deadly towards Elena.

I think I was ok with the infodumps, just because I sometimes like them. Especially when they have angels! But yeah, I felt it was more worldbuild-y than her Psy-Changeling series, though that may just be because I didn't read the first Psy-Changeling book.

I very much loved that Elena had a female best friend, but some of their interactions just didn't work for me. Then again, it's a lot like Singh's other character interactions-something about them feels fictionalized and glossy, without the messiness of actual people.

Yeah, the Raphael going cold totally didn't work for me. Also, I hated that Elena was all "OMG! I hurt him! WOES!" when I was thinking, "He is being a stalkery bastard with no emotions!"

I just saw I wrote "fun-totin'" instead of "gun-totin'." Which gives me entirely the wrong impression of these guys....
