Rec me anime!

Currently I have no kdramas except Gourmet on my list, and I'm caught up with most of the shows I want to watch. Also, I'm in the mood for short episodes. So, rec me anime (but please read the qualifications first)!

  • Available on Netflix
  • Not too bloody
  • Have cool women. I don't mind if they aren't the protagonists or if they don't physically kick ass ( Read more... )

Hmmm, seeing the list of things you disliked, I'm wary of recommending you this, but. XDD

Mononoke was a very interesting anime for me. It only has 12 episodes, and has a gorgeous and unique animation style.

It's horror and psycho drama set in Edo's Japan. It has some problematic things, the first act specially (a racist depiction of a black man, and... well, spoilers), but it gets... better. At least it did for me. It uses allegories and symbolism in a very Utena-like way. I liked it a lot.

Yes. Unfortunately, not Netflixable, except for the three-part story that inspired the 12-ep spinoff series, which is the third disc in the Ayakashi Samurai Horror Tales series ("the Goblin Cat").

Damn, that's too bad. Maybe for the future then?

I hope it's licensed soon. I ahem'd the series, and would gladly pay money for it. :D

Oooh, I'm sad it's not on Netflix! Erm, how scary is it? I am not particularly good with horror, although I am perfectly ok with Mushishi... I was gathering from some of Telophase's mentions that it was more folkloric?

Yes, more folkloric than creepy/scary, although it explores the deeper areas of the id. The base idea is that mononoke arise from the intersection of the spirit world and the darker side of human nature, and the Medicine Seller must learn the truth of the situation before he can act, so the stories unfold like flowers as he digs into the situation and what caused it. And people rarely have cause to speak the truth, so it may go through several iterations before the Medicine Seller can act.

So the situations that the mononoke arise from can be deeply unsavory and possibly unsettling, but they're not glorified.

What telophase said. Actually, it has nothing of scary, or of... suspense even. But it's very bloody now that I think about it. I didn't even notice because I was all about the psychodrama (well, except one arc that was kinda gruesome), and blood/gore was never the principal aspect of the stories. But yeah, it's kinda graphic.
