A personal history of anime and manga (the culture shock side)

Jun 30, 2005 23:37

I found some of my old sketchbooks a few days ago, and I've been flipping through them nostalgically. I forgot that I used to draw a great deal before... wasn't particularly good at it, but apparently it was just something that I did. Maybe I'll try and do that again, not so much serious drawing or anything, but just trying it out every so often ( Read more... )

I watched Robotech in the states back in the late 80s. I used to watch Sandy Dennis' Battle of the Planets too. When I was in high school, Captain Harlock and the Queen of A Thousand Years would air around 5 of 6 in the morning. I rarely caught that show. It was often followed by Sailor Moon which I found much less appealing. Frequenting a video store that was about 20 minutes away from me, West Coast Video, introduced me Ranma 1/2. It was a dubbed version but I was instantly drawn in by Akane and Ranma. When her hair was cut, I hooked. Viz was putting out the videos and I'd go out of my way to buy them ( ... )

Oh cool! It's really interesting to see the broad spectrum of anime/manga experiences, esp. here in the States where I get the feeling that things are changing pretty quickly.

Lovely reflection, even for someone like me who knows manga/anime almost exclusively by hearsay and a few episodes of Cowboy BeBop and FullMetal Alchemist. You have such a knack for a good turn of phrase.

Oh thank you! Heh, it's funny because I tend to think of myself as a rambler who just types anything that crosses my mind -_-;;.

But I'm glad it was of interest to someone who isn't a manga/anime fan as well.

This is very, very cool. I haven't written anything like this myself, because anime and manga are things that I've only really started getting into within the last six months or so.

The most frustrating thing was that every time I mentioned I watched anime (or "Japanese animation" or "Japanimation" back then), I swear, ninety percent of the time, someone would make some stupid crack about animated porn.
I get this a bit now when I mention I'm watching non-Miyazaki anime. Grr.

Oh, I'm glad you liked!

And, hee, if you feel up to it, I would love to hear your anime/manga starting story!

Oh, I think the whole being in love with the wife/girlfriend of one's older brother, which has vaguely displaced sibling incest overtones, especially since I've seen the being in love with the wife/girlfriend of one's older brother thing elsewhere.

It's so cool that you translate stuff! I sort of wanted to get into that after college, but never did. But I like my job now a lot, so all is well.

I think it was that, and the multiple one-step-removed incest! Even in KareKano, there's the whole step-brother step-sister sort of thing, which I think is sort of wanting the incest thing without actually tangling with all the dirty details.
