Happy International Ooops! Day

It's the 96th anniversary of the start of a certain mess that was once called the War to End All Wars.

"All this over an Austrian Archduke...?"

No pretty photos this year, or long winded diatribes about Ferguson's wishful scholarship on how things would be better if only Britain hadn't lived up to their obligations. (I still haven't read his books, but I have been re-reading W. Bruce Lincoln's study of Russia before the war, and another work on the Russian Civil War...and I suspect there is far more to this matter than Ferguson's thesis can support).

Just a moment of silence, in memory of all the good French, British, Canadian, German, Russian, Polish, Turkish, American, Bulgarian, Montenegran, Japanese, Austrian, and Italian boys who died because some idiot Serb with too much heaven on his mind shot the wrong man.

(No, that's not a comprehensive list. That's just everyone I can remember off the top of my head.)

history, war
