When I was living in the student hostel in Bendigo during VCE, I could see five different church steeples from my bedroom window. We were next door to the Anglican church; our building used to be part of the Anglican church property, as the bishop house, and across the road was the Presbyterian church, and on the block diagonally across from us was the Uniting church.
I was fond of these buildings, even if it meant Sundays was a nightmare with all the parishioners parking in our street, but the Sacred Heart Cathedral, two blocks away, creeped me out. I walked past it occasionally on my evening walks and the way it was carved into the hillside had a strangely disturbing effect. The only photos I can find with a quick Google are ones taken from the "front" side, on the lower slope, so you can't see what it looks like when approaching the church from behind, coming towards it from the top of the hill. It was like looking down into a pit with a massive monster rising out of it.
Today someone told me that apparently seventy (mostly Chinese migrants) workers were killed in accidents during the construction of the cathedral, on account of its size and height.
I knew that building was evil. Evil.
(Bonus evil points: Their ornate cross-decorated priest residence was opposite the road from the church, at 66 Short Rd.)
