Being in the closet screws with you in a lot of ways, and it can ve a dark place, but there is sometimes humor in it.
For exampke this conversation between my mother and myself.
Because I was deeply closeted at the time, I kind of had to censor myself, so hear is the conversation, including what I DID say and what I wanted to say.
Mom: (In her bad news voice) I have news about one of your siblings.
Me (concerned): What?
Mom: One of your siblings... (dramatic inhale) got a tattoo.*
Me: What did Erin get and where is it?**
Mom: How do you know it was Erin?
Me: Tim's too conservative; Sandy doesn't like needles, and it's not me. That leaves Erin.
Mom: ... *shocked silence*
Me (out loud): I only ACT like I don't pay attention.
Me (to myself): Seriously, mother, you've known me my whole life. How are you surprised by this?
Mom: It's just... how will this affect her?
Me: Lots of people have tattoos now. It's not a big deal.
Mom: What will the family say?
Me (out loud): They'll get over it. It's not the end of the world.
Me (to myself): I probably can't call my own mother a drama queen. That wouldn't go well.
Mom: What would she do this?
Me (out loud): Why not? Her body.
Me (to myself): So, I'm guessing that now ISN'T the time to bring up that I Was thinking about getting my nipples pierced.
Mom: What about people who will judge her? What do you think?
Me (out loud): She'll deal with it, though I don't think there will be much. It doesn't matter to me.
Me (to myself): I picked up some guy and had sex with him in a cemetery last weekend. I'm pretty sure I don't get to judge anyone's life choices.
The conversation continued from there, but the subject changed. No one cares about the tattoo now.
*This was said in that "I have a failed as a mother tone of voice."
**It's a four leaf clover with "Erin go Bragh" underneath it. It's small and she covers it up at work.
