agreed agreed agreed - although i had never thought about the boys not talking about not-benny before, which is interesting. i think it's sort of the point as well, because they are all drawn together entirely because of her, and wouldn't like to be, but it is a bit lazy.

the torture thing really annoys me, too, though - and the speachifying. less so, obviously, but i distinctly remember listening to whatever that one with sarah jane was, and thinking 'this story about benny dragging herself along with broken legs is too dramatic and stupid to be real- oh no it isn't'. i assumed it was going to be some sort of lesson that she was teaching people, based on a made up story, but it's just another thing in the life of bernice summerfield.

i would add to this list of benny-unsubtlty that i am continually annoyed by the way her relationship with peter is portrayed when he's not around. presumably some mothers (lots of baddie aliens are almost excused thusly) are like that, but it strikes me as over the top every time, and maybe it's unfair to say that a lot of these episodes are written by men who imagine women to be like this, but i guess i've said it anyway.

also, i should say - i also really like benny when it's good.
