Wow. I've never been so thankful in my life.
Today I was in the nail salon with my mother, getting my tips re-done and my mom was getting a pedicure. This woman came in and she was in like, farm clothes, and she had her Marlboro cigarette box hanging out of her pocket. She was with this man and the man asked "You do pedicure's here right?" And the owner, Kay responded with a sweet "Yes, yes we do...pick out your color." So the woman, I don't recall her name, starts browsing the nail polish colors. The man who was with her says "Get pink, Goddamnit, just get pink!" Please realize that there were about 2 or 3 women also getting their nails polished as well as me and my mother. So the woman was like "Okay fine, I'll get pink!" so she picks out a light pink and Kay brings her to her pedicure seat, next to my mother. The man says "Okay I'm going next door, I'll be right back." Note that this man is also dressed in ragged clothes and was smoking a cigarette, ruining the wonderfully air freshened nail parlor. So he walks out of the salon to the place next door (Which is Squire's aka, the bar).
My mother starts having a conversation with this woman, and over the loudness of the foot jacuzzi, I heard snip-its of the conversation. It was mostly the woman talking and my mom responding with an occasional "Aww...Is that so?...Yeah, that happens...I see..." This woman was telling her stories...
"You know, that man isn't my boyfriend or anything. He is my boyfriend's friend. I really don't like him at all. I just finished cleaning his house, since that is what I do for a living, and he decided to take me to get my nails done. My boyfriend is coming later ... Yeah my mom let me start smoking when I was 12. I miss her a lot. She died a few years ago. She was really the only person who I truly love and who truly cared about me. I have a tattoo of a cross with her birthdate and deathdate on my arm, see, see here ... My son, he's only 16, he rides dirt bikes. He gets hurt a lot. I worry about him sometimes ..." This went on for about 40 minutes until both she and my mother were finished getting their toes polished. Then my mother went over to the dryer and the woman went to get her fingernails painted.
Suddenly another man comes in. Dressed the same as the other two people, except he had a blue bandana on. He says "Hi dear, our friend left, so I'm driving you home." This was the woman's boyfriend. He was so sweet, and wasn't rude at all to the woman. After the woman's nails were finished, she went over to the dryer as well. Again, my mother and her started having a conversation, and this man also took part in it. I was soon finished with my tips and walked over to the nail dryer, where I began to talk to both the woman and man. Please also note that this woman had salt and pepper colored hair. She started talking to us about how she wanted to get her hair cut. She went to 2 salons in Briarcliff, and both said that there was no one there that could help her. It started to make me almost cry. The people in the salon took one look at her and knew that they were definitely NOT going to help her. My mother, obviously knowing why they didn't take her, reassured her by saying that the hair salons were probobly closing soon and that's why. Then my mother turned to me and said "You want to go on the boat after this right?" and the couple both gasped and the man said "Oh whoa, that must be so nice to have a boat. They're so expensive. Once we get the money were gonna get a boat, right hunny? I'm a plumber see, and when I was working by the dock one year, my boss let me borrow his boat. It was so much fun. I hope I get one some day."
That right there just made me so greatful. I live in Briarcliff, and I consider myself one of the lesser rich here, but if I compared myself to these two, I feel like friggin Donald Trump. I know I can't tell the story exactly how it was, but you should have seen her. It was so sad.
I hope that when you read this, you all realize how greatful you all are too.
