B!rthdays & Hol!days: Dinner With Extended Family

Dec 23, 2007 21:40

!! Dear Whomever Gives A Damn !!
Dave had called a couple days ago and asked if we were going to go with them to Deloraine, to have dinner with his family. The last time I had dinner with his family, was, two years ago. Because Isabella was only a few months old and they were all "oohing" and "aahing" her while she played on the floor. So was I nervous when Kris told me we were going? Of course. I always feels awkward at these get togethers because I know almost nobody and they just stare at me.

So around fourish in the afternoon, Kodie called and asked if we were ready. I asked if they were planning on leaving earlier than 4:30 because that is what Dave had told us. He said he thought so. I hate talking to Kodie because he's always so confusing and he never gives a straight answer. So, eventually, he put Debbie on the phone and she let me know that she wanted to stop at the Bargain Shop in Deloraine before we went to the house for dinner because she wanted to get Dave's mother something for Christmas.

We get picked up at about 4:20, and head on our way to Deloraine. Kodie, Kayla, and Isabella are smushed in the back seat, while Kris and I get the two bucket seats behind Dave, who is driving, and Debbie who is in the passenger seat. It was a trip that seemed to take forever. I have no idea why it seemed to take so bloody long, but it just seemed to take forever to get there.

Finally, we get there, and Kris wasn't sure if the Bargain Shop was still open - but it was. Debbie asks if I want to go in, and Kris says "no, I'm fine here thank-you" and she responds that she wasn't asking him, she was asking me. Because she only said "would you like to come in?" - so none of us were really sure as to who she was talking to. I just laughed and said "boy Kris, sure can feel the love eh?" He snorted. Obviously had nothing to say.

Inside, Debbie was actually looking for more Christmas gifts for Kris and myself. She told me to look around, pick something out, and she was going to look for Dave's mother. So, I'm looking around, no idea what to get. I saw this really nice track suit. Blue, pink, and black were the only colors available. I didn't wanna prance around in pink or blue because I'd look like a huge ball of cotton candy. The black was nice and had red and white on it, so I picked that up for myself. Then for Kris, we looked around, and tried to find something for him. Finally, I found hoodies. Saw a real nice green zip up one that had "Corona" on the front. We decided he'd like that.

We finish paying at the till, and are just to head out the door when we see Kris standing just off the side walk - looking in the window, with his hands in his pockets. Debbie opened the door, and I asked if he was trying to peek at what we were doing. He said no, he came to get our "slow asses". To them, who were sitting in the van, it seemed to take forever. For us, it was maybe five minutes - that's how it felt. We were gone about fifteen. They told us Isabella was screaming "come on!" and waving her hand - trying to get us to come out faster I guess. Thought it was pretty funny.

So, finally we get to the house and we see like five vehicles parked in front of the house. I was told by Kris that it would only be a few people - five vehicles? That looked more than just a few people to me. I looked in the window - the dining room was full. Oh brother. My stomach twisted into an enormous knot. I hate big crowds, especially when it's his family and I hardly know them.

We get in there, and everyone just stares at me. I felt like such a retard. I'm as big as a whale, and scruffy looking - and they all just stare. It was horrible. For the first bit before supper, we watched the football game. New England against Miami. Miami was getting their asses handed to them, it was horrible. Couldn't throw or catch the ball worth a damn, and couldn't get a field goal to save their life. Then it was supper.

Supper, mind you was delicious. That is for sure. Especially the salad that had almonds and oranges in it, oh damn, that was so good. But I also had marshmallow salad, and they put lots of oranges in that. So, while Kris and I were sitting on the couch in the living room after supper, he asked if I liked it and I told him I did but had way too many oranges - he asked how and I told him with both salads and picked a lot of oranges up. I said at least I got my Vitamin C intake for at least a week.

Wasn't long after supper that we had to leave though. Dave wasn't feeling too hot, as he usually doesn't lately. Really wish the doctors would find out what's wrong with him, this is just becoming ridiculous. He's been like this since about June, and they've yet to do anything useful for him.

Kris had to drive because Dave wasn't feeling too well. It was a real quiet trip home. I was stuck in the very back seat, and it was extremely cramped with Isabella's car seat back there and then Kayla too. It was cramped for everyone except Isabella, obviously. But it was a quiet trip. Isabella slept and the rest of us were just quiet. It was nice.

It was a pretty good night. I was nervous as hell the entire night. The one thing I hate about family get togethers is being introduced to the family. Why? Because I always feel like a retard when someone introduces me. I don't know what the hell to say, so I usually just raise my hand - like a little wave - and then go back to whatever I'm doing. Or just utter a quiet hello which usually ends in a squeak because I said it so quietly...which really makes me feel retarded. But other than that, it was a good night.
