Only Human, Death Note, Misa/Rem, high school AUcuddlesquidJanuary 26 2009, 02:31:48 UTC
Of course everyone in school knows Misa is going out with Light Yagami. They're the golden pair, the school's brilliant children, one of them already accepted to law school and the other in negotiations for a record contract. They've gone beyond Most Likely To Succeed.
What no one seems to notice (or chooses to ignore) is that there are a multitude of little imperfections. Like the fact that if you watch carefully, any time Light kisses Misa, it lasts exactly two and a half seconds and she never puts her arms around him. Or the fact that they never hold hands. Or the fact that Misa's best friend is the strange pale transfer student with a glass eye and long dark braids who nobody else talked to in sophomore year.
Light himself never notices. And, as Misa and Rem have often laughed to each other, if the supposed genius doesn't get it, they're not going to tell him a thing.
*
One night after the stress and frayed nerves of final exams, something between them breaks. Rem's parents are out having dinner; their apartment is so empty Misa can hear her friend's quick breathing.
Something that starts as a trembling, relieved hug goes wrong somewhere in the middle.
Rem's hand slips, brushes Misa's breast. Misa gasps; her fingers go numb for a second before she realizes she's tugging at the tail of Rem's blouse. And just like that they can't go back to sweetness and flirting games--what's between them has to be closer, more immediate, more real.
It's nothing like in the dramas Misa watches or the fluffy novels she and her friends read. The lights are on, Rem's bra is a bitch to unhook, and they kiss so hard Misa swears her lipstick is being sucked off of her mouth. Rem whimpers very slightly when Misa pinches her nipples, one after the other, but her breath catches and she curves up off of her futon hard when her friend traces gentle fingertips down the side of her ribcage. And they're clumsy with each other, wrists rubbing and bumping as each girl fumbles for the other's clit, both of them moaning just a little too loudly and terrified that a neighbor will start banging on the door.
Rem has a deep voice for a girl, and it makes shivers swim down Misa's spine when Rem buries her face in her shoulder and murmurs her name. "Please," Rem breathes, two fingers tracing faster and faster circles on Misa's clit. Misa kisses her ear sloppily, and realizes too late--Rem startles almost violently--that she's on her friend's blind side.
"Oh god, I'm sorry--" she begins, but Rem's teeth close around her earlobe, so apparently it's not an unforgivable offense.
When Rem comes, her hips shove down against Misa's hand and her fingers come together too quickly, pinching soft flesh. It's sharp and sweet and it drives the breath out of Misa's lungs, making her all electricity under the skin.
*
Sometimes their secret makes them laugh. Neither one of them has to say anything, really--they just look at one another and the giggles start. Misa is always the first to laugh, but Rem laughs loudest.

God god god this whole thing is so fucking delicious but this whole paragraph is the hottest part to me because just, the immediacy and vividness of all those imperfections makes it so raw and real-feeling (both in terms of the porn ~leaping off the page~ and in terms of me being able to feel what Misa and Rem feel, to really believe they're feeling everything it says they're feeling) and just. God. Special and intimate and lksdjfklsdjfklsdf MOSTLY I JUST CAN'T GET OVER THE AESTHETICS OF MISA WITH HER ANTHROPOMORPHIZED BFF REM, THOUGH. I LOVE THIS. AHHH.
Your writing style is just fluid and gorgeous as always, too.
And the ending, oh man. I'm grinning so hard:

This is so fantastic and so, so hot. I loved Rem and Misa's interactions in canon, and finding fic for them is haaard, and this was really fabulous and reminded me of why I loved Rem so much in canon in the first place.
I love how easy you write their relationship, the sense of friendship and closeness between them. The mention of Rem flinching at Misa being on her blind side was a really nice touch, as was Misa realising that Rem would forgive her it (since really, Rem will forgive Misa anything). This is just adorable and hot and something I didn't even realise really I was hoping for until I read it!
