Some of the British ambulance services have started a campaign to help make it easier to contact relatives in case of emergency. Hopefully this is an idea that will spread across the country.
All we need to do is add the contact name ICE (for In Case of Emergency) to our mobile phone directory, along with the phone number of our next of kin. I actually have more than one, labelled ICE, ICE2 and ICE3, in the event that they can't get through to the first choice.
I think it's an excellent idea, so if you're in the UK, do consider doing this, and spreading the word to your family and friends. And if you're in another country, it would be worth finding out if there's some similar scheme in operation.
ETA: You can find more information on ICE
here - it has spread to the USA and Australia, so I'd encourage everyone to add an ICE number to your mobile/cell phone and to spread the word.
