There's a site called Writer's Database that does pretty much the same thing as duotrope but for free. I haven't had a chance to explore it yet. I am very attached to duotrope, though. I think that if I manage to sell a piece, I'll take a subscription with them. At the moment, I don't claim much of my writing related expenses on my tax return as I just think it wouldn't be fair to claim for that much given that I don't earn a living by writing. I only claim my writing magazine and Writer's Yearbook, the idea being that those can double up as market research tools for my editing business. Over the last few months I've bought quite a few books for research for my Aztec story but I don't feel that I can claim those back in good faith. In a way, I don't have to make that decision now as they won't be relevant to the tax people before my next tax return is due. I'm still to file my tax return for this year but I've got until 31 January so I'll do that after I've sorted out the French Grammar copyedit that's due on 14 January. I've got to push through the chapters like mad right now so I can send my queries to the authors before 4 January. It's all a bit crazy....
On the writing front, I've been toying with ideas for the story I'd like to sub before the end of Jan and come up with key questions the story has to answer for it to be believable. It's not as much as I would have like done by this time but it's better than nothing. Let 2013 be the year when I find a way to write regularly. That's the idea, anyway...
