Writing diary 27/04/2011

I did a bit of writing when we were away and I polished the rest of my sub for the Pank special issue on Britain. I sent it to my friend Gill who is a very good critic. Hopefully, my revised version will be better than the first one she read and she'll enjoy it. The deadline is 15 May so I should be able to tweak it here and there before sending it through.

This morning, I typed the rest of my American story. It's a first draft so it doesn't really have a leg to stand on at the moment, even though I've been adding and changing bits as I typed. There's more work to be done there and I will stick to it, even though it doesn't look publishable (read fashionable) in the near or distant future.

I started reading The Ode Less Travelled when we were away too, but I stopped just before the first set of exercises. I'll have to pick it up again at some point, but not now, as my head is full of non-fiction and fiction rather than poetry.

I found and rewrote instructions on how to make a dream catcher. I sent the doc to the editor of the online mag who was thinking of writing an article on the biggest dream catcher in the world. I said I'd do it free of charge as the mag is struggling and I was looking into developping a good relationship with the editor. The future will tell if it was a right move.

I've been working on my article on archaeology too and I've got the raw data and a structure for it. What's left is the easy part: putting everything in the right place but I'm too tired to do it tonight. I've been at my laptop for 20 min and haven't got any further. I should be able to finish it tomorrow during G's nap. I'm not much of a night writer, not anymore. Too old, probably!

I still have to write my article on space travel but I have all the data ready to be used. I'm not in a hurry as the pub date - and that's if the mag doesn't pack up - is December this year. I'd like to send some artwork with the article so I should start looking into it soon. I guess I could paint/draw outside while it's sunny. That way, G could join in without endangering the furniture. I think I'll make her some overall though... Not a bad idea, after all, although the art supply would end up in the water in the activity table. I think I'm onto something...

As I'm partially brain dead again tonight, I might go to bed to read The latest People's Friend (not that I read the other issues in my possession). I needed some cash and the ATM was making a weird wiring noise so I went to the shop and got a couple of mags and some chocolate and asked for some cash back. I could try Delia Galton's method to kick start a short story for TPF. I'd like to earn money but I think I'm keener to see something of mine in print.

I haven't touched Savannah (new potential title still secret) but I've thought of books I should read to help with researching it. Once again I think I'm heading into a mammoth project, which is ironic really, as I started Savannah because my Indian book demanded too much research and time and I wanted to produce something publishable quickly. I guess that's just not the kind of writer I am!

non fiction, savannah, writing, short stories
