The garden is growing well. This is the first year we planned to use squash as ground cover around the tomatoes, and we decided to throw in tomatoes. It was a pretty good idea, but the squash has in some places to overrun the tomatoes -- they are growing at pretty different speeds. Guess we'll see how that turns out.
Aunt Barbara is dying this weekend. Her breathing started to change yesterday afternoon. Continuous hospice care is here, and we're most greatful for that. Jennifer has just left to Taiwan, and she is upset her timing is so poor in terms of Barbara's situation. I don't think she'll make it much longer, perhaps a day or two at most.
Aunt Barbara really taught us all something about the human condition, and for that I will be ever greatful.
Barbara's condition has drawn in extended family. Aunt Zena is here, which means so are her grandkids, so the cousins are all very happy to see each other and play around outside. It's a reminder of vibrant life in the midst of death.
It also means that our more conservative Uncle Wesley and Curtis get into political discussion with Mike and Mom that, as usual, manage to skip right over the real questions and land squarely in partison ideological lockstep zones. Oh well.
For some odd reason I can't get an old church hymn out of my head recently: "The Lord liveth / and blessed be the rock / and may the God of my salvation be exhaulted."
