Episodic Games

This is a perfect example of why people should never buy into games released in an episodic nature. (Like Minecraft: Story Mode for instance, although only using that as an example of the practice ( Read more... )

Absolutely this.

For me, unless you count the really early games that tried this piecemeal, cliffhanger bullshit (e.g. Shenmue, Legacy of Kain [after the first game, anyway, which was a properly contained, stand-alone game], Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, etc.), which, after the fact, I kind of feel like I got suckered by, then I also do not do the episodic thing (especially now that it has become a "genre" of sorts). And it is because of those earlier games leaving me feeling like I got screwed over that I don't do it. Admittedly, I did buy the Strong Bad games on the Wii as they were released, but those are all stand-alone games with no real overarching story, rather than a single game broken up into five or six parts like pretty much all other episodic games are. But even for that, it still would have been a huge slap in the face if they'd simply cancelled the series after the first episode, even if they'd given me back my $10 or whatever. All other Telltale games (since they seem to be the king of this sort of thing nowadays ( ... )

(Fuck you, LiveJournal.)

But then, I scrolled down to the comments under the PC Gamer article, and the currently top-most, highest-voted comment is some idiot sucking the devs' dicks, lauding them for being "honest" and "wishing them the best" on their future projects. No, we fucking do not and should not "have to give them props for that." That right there is precisely why the modern video game industry is such a goddamn sewer pipe now, because people suck shit like this down and ask for more.

(Hell, this shit isn't even limited to games, anymore. Assuming it ever was limited to games in the first place, of course.)

Also, on a completely unrelated issue, fuck LiveJournal for its still-present bug with single-quotes/apostrophes in urls getting improperly replaced with double-quotes. I had to edit both of those comments above because they contained several links to Wikipedia sites with ' in the urls. (Pro-tip: if you ever have this issue, replace the ' or the wrong (&)quot(;) shit with (%)27, with parentheses removed, of course, and it should work. Why LiveJournal itself isn't automatically replacing single-quotes/apostrophes with (%)27 instead of (&)quot(;) already, I have no idea.)

For reference, the originally broken links:
Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People
Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

Unless and until LiveJournal fixes this fucking bug, all of those links will go to a Wikipedia "Bad title" page.

But if you replace the ' or (&)quot(;) with (%)27, it works:
Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People
Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse
Pirates ... )
