Al right, do you I have your attention?
In a small break from my goal of writing every day this month (since it is NaNoWriMo), I went to a book signing in Milwaukee. John Barrowman and his sister Carole were signing their children's book Hollow Earth, after a presentation/discussion. I have to say, that after hearing them speak, I think he's just become my hero. Her, too, in fact. At least a couple of my heroes.
Things that I loved about them/him:
- The obvious affection they have for each other (they are siblings, that doesn't always happen!) and for and with their family and partners, who were also in the audience. And, boy, does his dad love to do jazz hands!
- The fun they had talking, answering questions, and bickering. Sibling bickering is taken to a whole new level.
- How open he is about his life, his sexuality, his work, his many pursuits, and mostly how comfortable he seems to be in his own skin.
- His inability to be serious for more than five minutes!
- Their collaboration on the book during a several-hour sugar high! Yay, candy and long car rides! Things can happen.
- Great advice (which I wish I could remember. This is why I took very long videos. Eventually they will be posted to my YouTube account.)
- The accents. And slipping between English and Scottish accents.
- The innuendo. It's Jack! Er, I mean, John! I think it's in his blood!
Yeah, and so much more that I can't even put into words. The audience was fantastic. The geek cred was out and on display (purses, hats, scarves, stuffed versions of Captain Jack, everything). Stadium seating. Laughing so hard it hurt. It was definitely an amazing talk. And afterwards, Hailey and I moved through the signing line very quickly and suddenly there I was, standing in front of her. And him. Watching them boldly sign my newly purchased book! ('OMG, the man who kissed Gareth David-Lloyd touched my book!' Hee hee, that makes me laugh!) I said thanks! And "You're awesome!" Hey, at least I spoke. Hailey barely got the 'thank you' out. And then squee-ed and guffawed all the way out of the building.
Yeah, that was a fantastic evening!!
Although I do have to say, what made it even better was the new friend I made. Yay, a former/present FB friend has now become a friend IRL too! Yay! (Although, I think our minds are way too synchronized to be entirely sane, but, man!, I laughed so hard whenever we talked--during the car ride, getting turned around in Milwaukee, waiting for the talk to start, getting food--that I gave myself a headache. That's gotta be a new one!)
And now, as I peer impatiently at my iphone, waiting for it to publish the first part of the video clips to YouTube (why are you still debating between 19 and 25 minutes for this!! Do it!!), I treasure the day I just had. And .... I really want to sleep.
