I have gotten many letters in the past weeks that greatly affected my future.
Firstly there were the rejection letters from Oberlin and Swarthmore. Neither was entirely unexpected, but both were sobering. I suppose they made my choices easier, in some ways.
Second was the letter from Bard saying I was accepted. I have gotten nothing more from them about financial aid or anything, so I am adding that to the list of Wooster and Pitt assuming that I would be going at full price, or close to it. In the next few days I shall need to make my decisions.
I feel as if Wooster is the best fit in terms of classes and the way they approach learning and thinking. Also, they really, really want me - enough to spend 78 thousand dollars on me, which brings Wooster's cost down to approximately the same as Pitt's. However, it's far away from everyone, and the one class I attended was insanely easy. (I may not be being fair. It was a freshman course on the Odyssey, of course I already knew everything). I want things that will challenge me, make me work and think.
Pitt is an excellent school, but it's huge, and I'm not sure how that would mesh with my tiny utopia-brain. I need to examine it more specifically, go and take a tour rather than just staring at it from afar. It's in Pittsburgh, which is a city I already know I love, and a city my brother may end up living in.
Bard has offered me no money, yet. They are the most expensive and the most exclusive. But from what I've researched and what I've observed, their classes would fit well with my brain. The campus has gorgeous old trees, and is set right up against the river. There's a strange, abandoned garden we found. And unlike the other two (sorry possible future-Zach), it's actually closer to people I love. But on the third hand, I've also heard how pretentious the students there are, from many people whose opinions I tend to agree with.
The third (fourth, technically) and last letter I received just today. It was written in green and blue ink on old, whorled parchment, and it promised adventure. The wonderful Quinn is going to be traveling from Spain to Italy this summer, and there are going to be two weeks or so, the two weeks that just happen to be between the two Wayfinder camps I've been hired for, that she is going to be alone and aimless. She invites me to join her, and it is this letter that is my favorite, because it offers no difficult decisions. Really, if I am honest, no decisions at all.
Quinn, if you are reading this, I am going to call you tomorrow about details and fairy-tale fancyings. We will make this happen!
