Night light
Tonight's local history lecture was - for a change - on very local history. I've learned that the local stream was rerouted in the middle of the twentieth century (which explains the slope of the land) and that the mini cab company at the station was previously the livery company on the High Street. I've learned that dotted yellow lines by the side of the road indicated (perhaps with the help of signage) that parking alternated sides of the street depending on day of week.
Most versatilely, however, I learned that, before street lighting was put in, the telegraph poles were painted white to help make them visible in the dark. How very sensible! The local council is considering turning of street lighting after midnight somewhen in the future; perhaps the poles will be painted white again?
