This is good for a first-time Avatar fic! And Mai is pretty hard to write sometimes; I think you did a wonderful job :)

Thanks! Well, technically I've written Avatar fics before...I was just never brave enough to share one until now.=P

Glad to hear that you liked Mai's characterization. It always bugs me when people underestimate her character. I see her as someone who takes the time to think deeply about things, even if she seems passive on the outside most of the time. So I tried to bring that across, more or less.=)

Nice vignette.

"she had always thought it was these things, the things in life they found so dull or strangely empty, that connected them."
Pleasant thought, for her and for us, the shippers.

"she liked the whistle of the flight through the air, the feeling that she could control the uncontrollable."
I just liked that line, too, for some reason ;)

Thanks for the comments.=)

Haha, yeah. Well, I think growing up they would have both shared a certain amount of apathy for the high society life they were born into. We know Mai's always been bored by it, and Zuko seems to be the kind of person who isn't satisfied by superficial appearances. I see him as always searching for something deeper and not finding it.

"I just liked that line, too, for some reason ;)."
I'm glad.=) I feel like Mai learned how to throw knives out of a desire to control volatile things, seeing as growing up she didn't have control over much.
Actually, that was one of those lines that I wasn't really planning on writing, it just kinda popped up in one of my last drafts and seemed to work really well. Funny how that happens.
