Kevin Smith embraces the owlblot ship

So Kevin Smith was the guest reviewer on this week's podcast from SlashFilm, which you can find here if it takes your fancy. The first hour and forty five minutes are a discussion of Watchmen both as a film and as an adaptation, which is interesting in its entirety, but at around fifty minutes in, Kevin Smith brings up one of his favourite scenes from the comic that he thought was translated well. Specifically, that handshake.

[NB: Kevin Smith quotes are in bold, transcribed more or less exactly as I heard them.]

He talks a bit about Rorschach's complete lack of socialisation and inability to interact with other people normally, and then continues on:

That panel could also be read with some sexual tension, as well, where, like, y'know, where it's not unheard of to have somebody who's staunchly conservative, as Rorschach is portrayed in the book, also have this other hidden side.

Conversation then seques briefly into Rorschach's conservatism, and then swings back to that scene:

I always wondered did he [Moore] intend that to play as this moment where he's like, y'know, Rorschach when finally dealt with as a human being, like, when Dan finally confronts him and his, kind of, mask cracks or whatever for that moment where he apologises, that in that moment where he cracks a little bit, a little more of who's underneath Rorschach comes out, and maybe it's this guy who wants to suck Nite Owl's cock. You know what I'm saying? Like, I don't think I'm out of line, I think that's a pretty decent read of that scene. I mean, you know, I'm obviously playing it a little more humorously with the sucking of the cock thing, but I thought it could very well have been, like, him, you know, kind of touching a dude or touching his friend in that way that like "for years I've wanted to to touch you like that".

Of course, none of the other podcasters have ever thought of it like that (and is it ironic that their website's called SlashFilm?):

Am I really the only one? I find that shocking! That is one of the things when I read that book, and I've read that book so many times, but one of the times I was reading it I was like "oh shit, maybe this is kind of a homoerotic moment".

Somehow, Kevin, I don't think you're the only one. :D
