Silly Shippers!

I'm reading a lot of comments from lj'ers who are distressed that the new Buffy S8 Joss fanfic comics aren't resolving their favorite on-screen romances.

But the romances they mention were already dealt with conclusively on screen. There really isn't any call for more telling of those stories now that they're over.

Angel/Buffy

They dated for about eight months back in 1997 and 1999. It was very intense for a while but it didn't work out. Angel left and Buffy was in the saddle again with a new guy three episodes later. They still care about each other but don't really want to see each other all that often. It's a pretty well trod story and the value of the intensity they shared is not diminished by having been over for six years (assuming The Long Way Home takes place in early 2005 or so).

By the way, was I the only one who was offended by the way Angel neglected Buffy in S3? They'd be all cuddling fully clothed or waking up after a long night of snuggling, again fully clothed, and Buffy had to act guilty for tempting him. But the soul won't come unglued putting that tongue to work satisfying her. (hint: not by talking about his feelings.)

Buffy/Spike

Spike fell in love with Buffy. Buffy pulled him into a dark romance and it ended badly. Then they became the closest of friends, vulnerable and interdependent. Spike was still in love though. In the end Spike told her "You're the one," and she still didn't want to be, though it was obvious to us she felt very much the same way.

Being in love doesn't satisfy your partner much when you are honestly determined not to be. And from "I'm not ready for you not to be here" to "does it have to mean something?" Buffy doesn't want to be in love with Spike. Makes no difference whether she is or isn't.

Spike knows it full well which is why he went off with the "no you don't but thanks for saying it." That leaves some potential drama in the works. But faking your death so that you can get over the ex without actually needing to reject her face to face is a resolution of that drama. Maybe you don't like the resolution, but that is exactly what Spike did and it's a plausible, though bad mannered, thing for him to do in that situation.

Spike wants to be over Buffy and by TGiQ and Power Play he seems to be making better progress on it even than Angel.

So the Spike/Angel and Buffy stories are independent now. There is no need for more resolution, though enough tension is left to make it fun. No doubt Joss will string us along though if we allow him to.
