Area man enjoys job, writes headlines

Nov 05, 2006 14:07

So, I've done three days of work for the paper sofar. Thursday was training, pretty much, but on Friday and Saturday I did pages. 'Doing pages' entails rather a lot. My main job is 2A, so I get a health article, some birthdays, some deaths, some 'this day in history' things, some celebrity stories, and some big interesting thing in the region. I pull all of these from various sources (You know how breaking news comes 'over the wire'? Yeah. I have that wire.) and I organize them on the page and write their headlines. In a lot of cases, I get to choose what goes into the paper. For example, there were several 'this day in history' things for one year ago, but we only had room for one, so I picked the one about pirates.

The hours are plenty crazy. I work from 4:30 to 12:30 on a normal day, and don't get home until 1 or so. I like the people, though, and I like the work environment. It seems to be less stressful than the reporting side of things. Balancing my schedule with Manda's is a bit tricky, but we'll manage. I think I can be okay with this job for quite some time.

Now, to find some housing.

Also, this post is dedicated to Guy Fawkes. In England they have a saying: "Guy Fawkes was the only man who ever entered Parliament with honorable intentions."

And, in fairness, it's also dedicated to V.

Remember, remember, the fifth of November,
The Gunpowder treason and plot.
I know of no reason why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.
