This is one of two one-page comics I drew for issue 7 of Tango, a square-bound romance comics anthology published approximately annually by Cardigan Comics. The theme for the issue was “Love and Sedition”. I’ve removed the dialogue, so to read the comic (which is NSFW, by the way), you’ll have to buy a copy from
the Cardigan Comics website. The 152 page book features 35 stories by 40 creators, so it’s well worth it.
Useless trivia
The title is taken from a line in a song by the band Defiance, Ohio.
When I drew this I was still working on Basic Wage Kids and wasn’t very happy with my ability to draw the female characters in that strip (compared to the male characters), mainly because I didn’t have a model I could use for reference to get the anatomy right. I originally intended to heavily photo-reference this comic and draw it as painstakingly realistically as I could. However, I had camera problems, and availability difficulties with the girl I asked to model, who eventually bailed on me completely. Luckily one of my housemates was able to step in at the last minute, although I didn’t end up being able to take nearly as long over the art as I wanted. Consequently, this comic, like Bernard Fanning’s life, turned out nothing like I had planned.
This was the first comic page I inked predominantly using a brush in several years (during which time I used a dip pen).
I had a fresh inkwell when I began this page and the new ink wasn’t coming out black enough (partly because my brush doesn’t lay down ink as thickly as my pens). To get a line that was black and not grey, I ended up having to boil the ink to make it more concentrated.
