my flight ended up getting into philly 20 minutes late... on a 45-minute connection. and i had to catch the shuttle out to f terminal. and, of course, once i got there, my gate was literally the farthest down

Congrats on pulling through. One of my first major airline trips as a child involved a similar escapade, and all too many subsequent events have reinforced the idea that where possible, assume that airline travel will involve fleeing with your luggage - pack and dress appropriately.

To me that's one of the most annoying parts of all these recent air travel "security" restrictions... it makes it much more difficult to go carry-on only.
