“You haven’t been very sociable lately.”

If there was any accusation, it was overshadowed by the girl’s buoyant smile. He looked away, shrugged, and carefully worded his excuse. ...Reason.

“No, I haven’t. I’ve been...” he paused as she appeared over his shoulder, using the stone ruin above for a tactical lounging advantage. “Training.”

“For what?”

“For getting stronger.” He stood, and tried to gain some ground for himself. “Besides, you only come around when...”

See, there - she even had him lying. She came around when she felt like it, and only mostly when she had fallen into another one of those adventures of hers. The truth was, she was dangerously addictive. And being dependent was... well, being dependent.

“If I didn’t know better, Escad, I’d think you didn’t love me.”

And there was no proper way he was going to answer that. It was a trick, and a trap; he didn’t deal in those, but that didn’t mean he was going to fall for it. Besides that, she knew him proper enough that she should have known better.

There was a scrape of metal, and her weight on his back; a sword landed upright at his feet, and he glanced at her from the corner of his eye.

“What’s this?”

“An adventure. S’pposed to grant wishes.”

“Is that so?” She nodded, and so he deliberated, “I’m listening.”

She smiled again, in her completely happy way. He didn’t entirely mind, because it made him remember why he would ever want to be addicted.

“Wanna go together?”
