DreamWidth. I kinda get that it's LJ, but also not, and I am uncertain why it is so awesome in comparison. Is there a migration going on that I should be part of, or at least be aware of?
Dreamwidth is a fork of the LJ code designed, in general, to be inclusive to people of all types and interests, and also supportive of creativity in general. They changed a bunch of things in the LJ code, such as splitting what used to be your friendslist into "I want to read this person's stuff" and "I want this person to be able to read my protected stuff." Both of the founders have worked for LJ, and have a good grip on how social networking works, from what I've seen. One of the founders is heavily into fandom, and while they aren't going the OTW route and promising legal defense for fandom, they do have a very clear and full idea of exactly what the DMCA does and does not permit copyright holders to do (most people running such sites cave at the first hint of DMCA) and will not take anything down unless they actually get a full legal DMCA order

I think the main things they're trying to improve upon include transparency and the protection of user-generated creativity?
I'm sure somebody will come along with a better write-up. I'm certainly nowhere near steeped.
