Broadband a Go

Today I received my DSL modem, and am updating my livejournal for the first time from my new flat. It's a nice feeling to sit in a couch and type. This is something to which I won't have to work very hard to become accustomed.

These recent days have been a bit of an emotional shock for me. On the one hand, several of my very good friends are going to leave, and one of them just left today. On the other hand, I have a great friend from St. Charles arriving in... less than 48 hours, to start study at the University of Stirling, and I can't wait to see him. I'm barely going to believe my eyes when I see him walk through the gate on the 8th.

Last night (the 5th), my group went to watch the closing of the Edinburgh Festival, which entailed a very impressive fireworks show at the castle. It's difficult to describe in text, especially in detail. Suffice it to say, it was set to music, and they accomplished with finesse and subtlety what an Independence Day show in the US tends to accomplish with brute force. I wouldn't say one style of show is particularly better than the other, simply that the style used for last night suited it best, while the flash and excitement of a sustained barrage of as many skyworks as possible exploding in near-unison works best on Independence Day.
