[ooc] Hogwarts AU?

Jul 20, 2007 01:03

This is a post for information on my characters for the Hogwarts AU. I may or may not actually play in this-- both my characters have distinctive points that make it hard to play them in the Hogwarts setting, but I do have a couple of ideas which I want to put down, and maybe sort it out with canonmates and see if they're too farfetched before deciding whether I should be playing. I'm not posting this in the AU comm yet because I have kinks that I need to figure out!

Most of this is tl;dr and looking at how much there is to convert I'm like "... LULZ I might as well save myself the trouble and just play in camp", but it's kind of fun thinking about it.

Toph-- I absolutely do not want her to be able to see. That's what makes me iffy about RPs with Toph-- for some reason she can see her LJ! Or someone cures her of her blindness in a game and yeyz! I don't know, I think by making her be able to see I'll be changing too much about what makes her. To a certain extent, yes, I am saying that blindness is a big part of Toph, even if that might sound ridiculous or even sad, because I'm saying "Toph will not be Toph if she was not blind". I would actually say that that is the case, because it's a big part of her life. She grew up with it. Was constantly held back by her parents because of it. Her ability to earthbend is to that level because she's blind. Jokes with her in canon are based on her blindness. She's bitter about being seen as helpless, and constantly wants to prove that she can carry her own weight and kick ass-- why? Because she's blind.

SO that mini-essay just basically says one thing: Toph is staying as blind. Now, the HP world isn't very blind friendly. Divination (the whole seeing thing) is out, Quidditch (flying) is out, Potions (changing colours? Eh.) is out, Astronomy (lulz) is out. In order to make this work, I'm thinking of making Toph being sensitive to and able to detect magic. This would include magical objects, creatures, charms, potions, people(? I'm thinking about in terms of how she gets around in the Muggle world...)... basically anything that's magic. In this way, Quidditch is in (flying brooms? And chances are that the players are carrying their wands, which are magical objects), Potions... she can at least muddle her way though it even if she can't see the colours; different types of potions give off different "feels", in the same way I'm intending for her to be able to tell a Protego from a Wingardium Leviosa, for example. Astronomy and Divination are still mostly out. Even if she's able to detect magic, these 2 subjects have a lot to do with seeing, but having her be insanely "RAR" about these subjects amuses me kinda.

As for how she takes an exam and writes essays? ........ lulz? I have no clear idea. I mean, she could have special exams that uses an oral style, but ehhhhh, she can't do research, can't write, can't eh. This poses more of a problem! I'm thinking of having her not as a student of Hogwarts because of this.

[EDIT] OKAY she takes her exams with a special quill that writes her thoughts! And she probably takes her exam alone too-- she's allowed to use a Babbling Charm (kindly suggested by Sokka and Dietrich \o/) so that what's written down can be read back at her and she makes amendments and stuff like that. Research is also done this way~ [/EDIT]

Background-wise I've got her down. Prominent, wealthy all-magic family in the wizarding world (and from China?). They don't actually do much, but they're well known enough. In the same way as canon, her parents were horribly protective of her and tried to keep her from the world. But from young she realized she could detect magic, and taught herself how to cast/use magic. This was all done in sekret! She also took part in an underground wizarding duel tournament while she was at home. Her parents hired a magic tutor for her, but kept her at a beginner's level.

[ADDITIONAL] Moar information! Because she's been doing magic and teaching herself magic since she was young, she's better at spell casting without a wand as compared to the average wizard. What she's especially good at is dueling, due to her exposure to wizarding duels in the underground tournament. [/ADDITIONAL]

... SO uhm I haven't decided whether she'd be a student of Hogwarts or not. So I've got the basics, but here it splits. She can either be a student of Hogwarts, or not.

[EDIT] Now confirmed a Hogwarts student! [/EDIT]

If she is, Toph got a letter from Hogwarts when she was 11, wanted to go to learn more magic, parents veto-ed it, and she ran away from home 8DDDDb No idea who signed her papers though. Probably "borrowed" her family stamp or something. Would that work?

[EDIT] Now a confirmed Hufflepuff! \o/ [/EDIT]

She'd be either in Gryffindor or Hufflepuff! I've explained this before: Gryffindor because she's courageous, but stubborn when she wants to be and all that, Hufflepuff because she's loyal to the Gaang in canon and always backs up her teammates in fights. So whether she'd be in Gryffindor or Hufflepuff depends on which house needs more members ahahahah. [ADDITIONAL] Plus Hufflepuff = badger, which just fits. [/ADDITIONAL]

If she's not then... I need to think about this. THIS IS FAR TOO LONG. WILL EDIT AS I THINK UP OF MORE THINGS. Or just give up.

For Bloo.... he's not human. He could be a ghost! Or a pet! I need to talk to Mac (and Dot?) about this if they intend to play. askjfbaldsf OKAY Toph kind of filled up my essay quota for today so Bloo's HP profile is on hold. D: If he's put in a house, he may or may not be in Slytherin (as I mentioned before). Chances are that he'd be in whatever house Mac is in.

I... don't think anyone's really interested in all that. If you've read it, gimme ideas and opinions if you have them? T^Tb I'm open to suggestions, tweaking, and just talking about this in general.
