Appearance: Although his actual height is unknown, Stein is a fairly tall man who just about towers over the majority of the characters in Soul Eater, with grey hair, green eyes, a bolt going through his head-that can actually turn! --  and numerous stitches all over his body  (and clothes).  He usually wears a white, stitched labcoat over a purple and green stitched shirt, dark pants, and stitched, light-grey shoes. He can be seen smoking a cigarette more often than not, as well.

Background/Personality:

[Personality:]

Stein is incredibly intelligent, and wise, though the latter is more than likely due to his fondness of observing and researching his surroundings. He also enjoys dissecting situations and…anyone or anything that captures his attention. If his appearance doesn’t hint at the slight lack of sanity, then his love of dissection surely does.

However, that doesn’t necessarily make Stein a bad person. When he’s not battling with his sanity, he’s quite the kind- albeit odd- fellow, and stands up for the good guys (though that would not keep him from dissecting any of his allies). Although he tends to keep most people at arm’s length (if not farther), and prefers act simple-minded in order to more easily be able to observe everything, he does have people that he willingly lets into his life, if only because he knows he needs them to save him from himself.

Emotionally, he himself has stated that he cannot feel/cannot understand emotion, his actions show otherwise, since he derives enjoyment from dissection, amusement from toying with his former partner, and showed anger at Medusa for treating Chrona, her own child, merely as research material and refuse. This suggests that Stein does feel, but that those feelings are muted or distant to an extent where he is more of an observer than one who closely experiences anything and can easily mask anything he feels. His ‘lack’ of feeling does not impede his decisions, as he seems to have a strong sense of justice and will do what he feels is necessary to uphold it, though his bouts of insanity may hinder his attempts, if only a little bit. Stein’s sense of morality is a bit blurred, because although he would dissect an ally out of curiosity, if he felt that his own insanity would overwhelm him and cause him to harm someone, he would, of his own free will, distance himself in order to avoid that outcome.

[Background:]
Not much is known about Stein before he became a teacher at Shibusen (a school training meisters and weapons for the purpose of maintaining balance in the world), other than that he is the strongest meister ever to graduate out of Shibusen, and that he has struggled with his insanity since he was a child, although he is notably less indiscriminately violent now than he was when he was younger. Due to his insatiable curiosity, he enjoys dissecting everything and anything, whether it be situations, or objects, or people in order to learn as much as he can about them. Because of this, he never quite fit in with people and preferred to be alone -- save for one or two people that kept him in check, mainly his former weapon, Spirit Albarn. Although he prefers to be alone, he is capable of integrating himself within a group of people and has shown himself to be an excellent actor due to his extensive observations of people in general.

As a teacher in Shibusen, his classes covered various subjects, ranging from the topic of the soul, to soul wavelengths, to how to resonate with your partner as well as other people in order to be able to fight as a team. When his lectures weren’t focused on the soul, they focused on (surprise!) dissection.

After the Kishin (a demon god) is released thanks to the efforts of Shibusen’s enemies, Stein realizes that it will become increasingly more and more difficult for him to remain sane, due to the fact that the Kishin’s wavelength spreads insanity and chaos. Because of his soul perception ability and the fact that he teeters on the edge of insanity, he is particularly susceptible to the Kishin’s wavelength, which slowly begins to push him over the edge.

1st person sample:

[The Guide fell open as it clattered onto the table, and showed nothing but darkness. All that could be heard was shuffling noises until a light was switched on, revealing a grey haired man blearily blinking as his eyes adjusted to the change in lighting.]

…Huh, there it is.

[Stein shuffled about observing the contents of the room for a few moments, before noticing the guide lying on the table, and gave it a curious look.]

Now what’s this?

[He picked up the guide and examined it closely, providing everyone a clear view of his stitched-up face. A few moments and many excited accidental buttonsmashy sounds later, the Guide switched to audio.]

Oops.

[And then promptly cut out.]

3rd person sample:

Stein wearily stood one of the many, many, many long lines of the New Arrivals area, surrounded by many, many, many refugees, both human (or at least humanoid) and alien in nature. If it wasn’t for the dire situation he was in- mainly, that his world was suddenly annihilated after a rather important and tiring battle- he would have eagerly went out of his way to observe any one of the fascinating creatures present. However, at the moment, all he wanted to do was to finish the damned paperwork he was obligated to fill out, and find somewhere quiet where he could compose himself and figure out his next course of action.

His next course of action would naturally involve discerning whether or not anyone else from his world was present, whether they were friend or foe. If they were friendly, they would team up and learn as much about this strange place as they could and see if there was any way to bring their world back. In the meantime, he would gladly research as much as he could about the native and foreign population, the level of technology, literature, methods of travel, medical procedures- definitely medical procedures-provided he ever got out of this bureaucratic nightmare.
