Book blab: Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan

These upcoming books are ones that I read weeks and weeks ago but was too lazy to make posts about at the time.

Title: Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List

Author: Rachel Cohn, David Levithan

Keywords: LGBTQ, friendship, coming out, first love

Plot Outline: The story is told from alternating points of view and is about teens living in Manhattan. Gorgeous Naomi and her best friend, the equally gorgeous and gay Ely, have been neighbors and soul mates since childhood, and in order to protect their relationship, they have created a list of people who are absolutely off limits for kissing. The list is meant to be "insurance against a Naomi and Ely breakup," but when Ely kisses Naomi's boyfriend, Bruce the Second, it sets off a chain of events that causes a major rift in their longstanding relationship.

My blabbing: This book is sooo entertaining. It has such a cool atmosphere and a colorful cast of characters, and I think I ended up liking every single one of them. It's nice to read a book that has some angst, but is still a lot of fun. Honestly, I wish they'd done a movie for this book instead of Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (by the same authors) first so this one could have gotten all the attention. Naomi is a very abrasive character, but the authors do a really great job with making us sympathize with her. Ely is kind of slutty and never really treats his boyfriends too well, so it's adorable to see the changes in him when he kisses the one person he really shouldn't. Naomi and Ely just make such a good pair. I don't want to describe them as bitchy, beautiful people because there's so much more to their characters, but... yeah. Read this book! It also has some great music recommendations from the doorman of their apartment who keeps making Naomi romantic mixed tapes. :)
