Chapman Application

I have met numerous health/medical challenges, which are reflected in
certain periods of my academic record. The first interruption in my schooling is
reflected in my Integrated III Math grades as a sophomore. During my freshman
year, I had to undergo two separate operations which took me out of school for
large periods of time. Math being a subject in which I already struggled, the
extended absence from Integrated II Math pulled me far behind. As our school
operates on an Integrated system, I did not know just how greatly I had been
affected by the absences until the next year, when those particular areas of math
which I had missed began to arise in more difficult forms.
The second shows that in my junior year I had a great deal of trouble
keeping my diabetes in control, especially in the morning. This is reflected in my
American Studies English grade. I had continually high blood sugars during the
morning hours, which affected my ability to concentrate, test well, and be
productive during that class particularly. This had a drastic affect on my grade, as
shown by the contrast in my scores in 9th or 10th grade English as opposed to
11th grade. As it was a block class, a change in periods was not an option, and
my teacher was unwilling to allow me to test at any other time of the day. This
problem has since been solved as I have discontinued the use of injections, which
is a wildly inconsistent form of diabetes control. I am now using an insulin pump,
which helps to keep my blood sugars in excellent control at all times of the day,
with many less problems. I am convinced that these two inconsistencies in my
academic record are purely result of my medical history.

Since the beginning of my college search Chapman University has been at the very
top of my list of options. As I began receiving more information I started realizing the wide
array of opportunities that Chapman has to offer me. On an academic level, I feel
that Chapman is without peer in the discipline I plan to pursue, which is film, and I am
aware that Chapman has programs that will help me to successfully reach attain my goals
and objectives in every aspect. I've always been drawn to the California atmosphere, and
Chapman's location will allow me the added support of having close-by family and friends.
I am a confident individual, and growing up I was never one to be a
"sheep." I attribute my personal uniqueness to being an adopted child. Being
already different from the time I was little, I have always aspired to be extraordinary
and avoid following any one crowd. This sense of individuality and universal
compatibility with all different types of people has influenced the most significant
parts of my life- sentiments of personal fashion, open-mindedness, and
willingness to accept others for who they are. I have been inspired to develop
unusually creative styles of expression, and explore "outside the box." I enjoy the
freedom that art, and film in particular, gives me to share and preserve the
experiences which have impacted my life.
Attending Chapman, I would expect to gain not only technical skills in the field of film
production and editing, but also a chance to explore other basic opportunities in studies
such as business and psychology. Having already started on the path to a transfer degree in
business at the local community college, I am well prepared to begin further studies at
Chapman University. I believe that it is important that I continue to advance my other
talents along with my pursuits in film in order to achieve optimal success. I am intent on
gaining as many new experiences and personal friends and contacts as I possibly can during
my college years. While staying in the area surrounding Chapman, I found that the
environment was ideal for me to continue the activities that I enjoy, such as tennis and
colorguard, and I am convinced that continuing such things will help me adjust easily to
living in a new area and meeting people.
My plans for the future are to pursue my interests fully through a college education. I am
intent on developing a career in some aspect of film, whether it be editing, producing or
directing. I aspire also to advance in my current line of work during my college years,
which is retail sales and visual merchandising. Such work has given me artistic inspiration,
as well as an outlet for creativity, and I plan to be partially responsible for the expenses of
my education by doing what I love.
