it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

hallelujah coverage

jeff buckley - i don't know anyone who hasn't heard this one, and really, it's the standard every cover is measured against. it's not my favorite, but the awesomeness of it can not be denied. there're more instruments used, but there's still such a simplicity.

rufus wainwright - oh, dear little rufus wainwright. i uploaded the studio recording, because i love how well you can hear rufus reaching for the higher notes. i really love his voice, and how imperfect it is really compliments the tone of the song.

gavin degraw - recorded live on carson daly's show with piano accompaniment. gavin lends it a jazzier tone, with some really beautiful vocal flourishes.

damien rice - damien plays the guitar for this one, recorded from his recent live performance at the hall of fame induction for leonard cohen. damien rice's voice is, for me, a religion in itself. this version has a really beautiful clarity.

allison crowe - a canadian singer-songwriter, covering it in studio with piano. i just heard this one tonight, and her voice was surprising to me. she really soars on the choruses. her voice reminds me of reba mc intire's, minus the twang.

imogen heap - another i just discovered tonight. a capela. her voice is quite ethereal and haunting.

fall out boy - this is in no way a cover of hallelulah but it is sampled, and i just absolutely love this song. the story is, that when pete overdosed on ativan in the best buy parking lot, he was listing to jeff buckley's hallelujah on the radio.

but now you never show that to me, do you// but remember when i moved in you// and the holy dove was moving, too// and every breath we drew was hallelujah

am i obsessed with this song? probs. so, you know, if you have moar covers give me them nao pls.
