I finished a book yesterday that was a real, uh, interesting experiance. 'Cult of Cthulhu' by Verner Satanis. What made it so interested was how serious the guy was trying to be about it. Well, first some
on Lovecraft and Cthulhu.
H. P. Lovecraft was the father of modern horror writing, movies are still made based of his stories. His lasting contribtuion is the Cthulhu mythos. He had the knack for not only writing his fiction in a very realistic style, but also linking all of his stories together. Centered around one 'diety' call Cthulhu. The great hold one who likes deathless but dreaming in the sunken city of Ri'leay, is the embodiment of evil and decay. Wikipedia has a really good article on both,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cthulhu_Mythos I add this in because Lovecraft and his stories are one of my favorites. Favorite STORIES that is.
Mr. Satanis is trying to take the entire thing very, very seriously. He's advocating a real Cult of Cthuhlu that seeks to hasten the return of the great one's banishment from our dimension by the old ones. It was laughable, at times, how serious he was about it, espicially his caveat on how the Cult of Cthulhy doesn't advocate animal sacrifice but does look forward to the day when they can legally sacrifice humans in their 'blasephomous and slimy rites'. Yes, he wants a Cthulhu basaed Theocracy to rule the world 'where our ritual chambers will be the courtrooms'.
I'm reading through this thinking 'you've got to be shitting me' but no, he's quite serious about it, even instructions in the end on how to join the offical Cult of Cthulhu and become a bona fide cultist. Somebody forgot their meds.
But, oddly enough, there was a lot of good ideas in the book if you can seperate it out from the rest of the crap. He had a lot good things to say about perception based reality and how to 'awake' to your own life and take control of things. He even had the rarely discussed concept of the many 'I's that make the self which I'd love to find more information on.
But I am tempted to send in the $50 so I can become a card carrying Cultist, just for fuck value.
