Hilaria

a) as an american citizen, i must pay taxes, even when living permanently abroad
b) as a permanent resident abroad, i can no longer vote in the states, and thus have no say in determining how my taxes are spent
c) as a permanent resident abroad, i am not privy to the services that my taxes go to, with the arguable exception of the maintenance of the road that i take when i visit and the embassy that doubles as a bomb shelter in Ottawa

therefore, i am seriously considering giving up my american citizenship. i feel like its illegal to pay taxes and not receive any benefits from them. most importantly, i vaguely remember a war being fought over the injustice of taxation without representation (which brings up the point that maybe the legal voting age should be lowered since minors can pay taxes when they work, but cant vote to determine how theyre being spent). since i am being treated in an unamerican manner, why should i stay an american? canadian citizenship is only two years away...

in other news, i shall look into holding a hilaria celebration for my birthday next year. this year, its murder mystery dinner and pie. mmmm, pie.
