Duty
An angel’s duty is many things, to protect humanity, to guide them on the righteous path, to fight against demons… Duty, what a joke, servitude is more like it, you’re expected to fight and yet be the serenest creature ever, never questioning orders, never getting angry at the poor little humans.
A demon’s duty however is a great deal different, cause chaos, kill all humans, bring about the apocalypse… It’s a little more fun but still a joke, expected to kill for no monetary gain? Killing is not fun, it’s dirty and messy and leaves you feeling dirty even if you are a demon. Chaos isn’t all that fun either- for one thing the bars are absolutely awful when chaos erupts, you can’t get a good drink anywhere, especially since the bartenders are either on fire or shooting people, or both.
Duty, such a stupid word and yet she hears it everywhere, “do your duty” get shot in a muddy hole far away from home, “A mans duty…” Spend all your life searching for something that doesn’t exist and die alone, “do your duty today” shatter your mind in a way so that it can never be put back together tomorrow.
Such a stupid word… And yet something that so many men and women will follow without a thought, it gets people killed, it breaks spirits and yet everybody still trails the concept blindly, it really is rather stupid.
She watches a military parade from a corner of a New York bar, absently sipping at a martini and scowling, thank humanity that she doesn’t believe in duty, she’ll live longer.
