Jones, eat your heart out

The door to the Inn is blown open by a massive gust of wind, and there's a rippling blue glow before a man, approximately in his late 20's, tumbles through. He's wearing what looks like air force camo gear, has straight brown hair that hangs around his chin, and large, round glasses. He's also wearing a rather floppy green hat and carrying a ( Read more... )

There's a young man, maybe sixteen years old, sitting in a chair nearby. He's pouring over a yellow length of parchment and tapping the back of a quill against his chin.

Curious, wouldn't Daniel think?

Daniel walks over and plunks himself in an opposite chair before setting a massive number of books - in various languages of course - on a free spot on the table.

"Um hi. My name's Daniel Jackson. Do you live here?"

"Not precisely, sir. My home is in England--I visit here to associate with certain friends of mine." His tone is quick, cultured, and eminently polite. The boy extends a hand. "James Potter. A pleasure, sir."

"No sir, just plain Daniel." He returns the shake. "Where in England?"

"London." Among other places. "May I welcome you to the Inn? Tis quite an extraordinary place, I must say."

This would be Daniel's doofy grin. "It sure seems it. Absolutely fascinating. And it exists outside of time and space? Sam would flip!"

"I'm fairly accustomed to strange circumstances but this rather beyond most of my experience." Strangely, he doesn't seem bothered.

"I'm getting used to traveling to different worlds across the galaxy, but not to a place outside of it."

To his credit, James doesn't react beyond a briefly raised eyebrow. "Indeed. I'm not terribly accustomed to arriving at a place in a manner indicative of magic, yet beyond any I have experienced myself."

"Magic? Oh, no, I...we... I mean, the team I'm on doesn't travel by magic. We travel by a very old network of technologically advanced transporters." He figures that nobody here has ever heard of the stargates, so disclosing a few non-essential details won't hurt.

"Ah. Muggle technology." What else could it be? James has far more respect for technology than many of his peers, however, and shows no sign of disgust or fear. "I am continually impressed with what can be accomplished without magic's assistance."

"Muggle? What's a Muggle?" He's got Daniel's attention now, the little walking encyclopedia...

"Ah--forgive me. 'Muggle' is a term that many of my kind use to refer to those persons who do not possess magic." James' tone is rather apologetic. "Unfortunately, some believe that lack of magic implies...inferiority."

He is NOT one of them.

Daniel blinks at James. And blinks again. "That's AMAZING. It sounds a bit like the way the Goa'old speak about those they've enslaved. So, how does the magic work?"

"Go'auld?" James blinks. At Daniel's question, he blinks again. "I...do not know the answer to your question. It simply...is."

"So it's like an energy field you can tap into? And the Goa'uld are a parasitic race of alien beings...they look like snakes with fins. Burrow into your spine and take control of your body. It's a long story. However, that transport system I was telling you about? It's been around for a long time. We're not sure who or what built it, but it sure is handy for fast travel."
