The trouble with fine-tuning an anagram charm by adding more letters is it means even more time poring over the results. Of course, there's the option of taking said results to the place where one has all the time in the world, and Regulus had been making the most of that option.
The narration says 'had been' because in so doing, he stumbled across a plausible-sounding name that... isn't quite familiar, but set off enough mental bells for him to mark the name on the parchment before heading to the library.
So now, he's got four or five books on wizarding genealogy, and he's checking them for any possible mention of a Riddle.
