I wish that I could see you again, I know that I can't

Ben's dead.

That's all in April's mind. She wants to drink. She wants, for the first time in ages, to be high, high as a paper kite, so she doesn't have to think. But she can't. And she can't bring herself to be broken on JD right now, because he's broken, and she feels so amazingly guilty that she can't be there for him, but it hurts too much ( Read more... )

The Doctor's just kind of wandering around. After seeing Rose and the TARDIS with the Vortex, he's not sure he wants to leave again until he sees her and makes sure she's alright. Though with the timelines the way they are here... Hmm. That could be a problem.

However, he stops worrying about that momentarily when he sees April. He's been hoping to see here since he got here.

"April!" he says, walking over with a bright smile, all oblivious cheerfulness. "The last time I saw you I was a different man."

He hasn't noticed the tears yet for he is the lonely dumbass. Give him a minute.

She looks up, blinking a bit, her expression pained. She frowns a little.

And then she gets it. Because that grin... it changes with the face, but it's always the same grin, always the same twinkle in his eye.

She forces a weak smile. "Doctor."

The one person who could make her feel better right now, short of Ben coming back. This is good.

The smile brightens even more. He always knew April was sharp. "You recognize me!" Yes, he's very pleased by that.

He takes a seat near her - and then he realizes there's something wrong. The Doctor is very perceptive. Or something.

"Did something happen?"

"Your smile's very distinctive," she says softly.

Sighs, and curls in on herself tighter. "A... a friend of mine died this morning." A very close friend. That should be obvious even to the lonely dumbass.

"Is it? I never noticed." Of course, he doesn't look at himself much in the mirror. It took him some time in this regeneration to even notice his ears.

He frowns a little. "Oh." He leans toward her, looking worried. "I'm sorry."

The Doctor's really not good at death and grieving. His best coping mechanism is "hey, let's go travel to some planet far away and pretend this never happened." If she's not careful, he'll offer to take her along somewhere any minute now.

April? Would totally be okay with that. Grateful, even.

But for now, she just scoots closer to him and leans against him a little.

She needs contact when she's upset. She's a very tactile person, and she had barely any positive physical contact until she was 18. It's a needy thing.

"JD... JD feels really guilty. He couldn't save Ben, and..." she sighs a little. I can't do anything to make it better. And Ben's gone."

The Doctor's used to people needing physical contact. He knows April, and lately, he's been around Jack, which will have an effect on anyone.

He wraps an arm around her shoulders, and is silent for a minute as he thinks. The Doctor? Really bad at grief.

So it's not entirely surprising that the next thing he says is, "Do you want to go somewhere? Anywhere in the universe you want. It's about time we went on a trip together again, don't you think?"

On the one hand, JD might need her. Something might happen. She should take time to deal with this.

On the other hand, if she can't drink, this seems like a good distraction.

"Yeah," she says with a faint smile. "Yeah, I think I would. It's way past time."

"Fantastic!" he says with a grin. April, you'll be hearing that a lot. "The TARDIS is right out through the front door, and have you met Rose and Jack? They'll like you."

Well, Jack likes everyone, and the Doctor sometimes just assumes Rose shares his opinions about people because she's his companion, why wouldn't she, but... Oh, whatever. It'll be fun.

"I haven't met them, no," she says.

Quickly, she thinks a note to JD. I'm with the Doctor. I'm safe. I'll be back soon. I love you. -April

The Doctor gets to his feet and waits for her to finish her note, and then holds out a hand to her with a well, come on! expression. Things to do, people to see, timelines to muddle.

April slips her hand into his and pulls herself up. Lets him almost-drag her to the door (because that's totally what he does). And, before being dragged out, makes sure she thinks up her coat.

She can't go on an adventure without her coat.
