Ben's dead.
That's all in April's mind. She wants to drink. She wants, for the first time in ages, to be high, high as a paper kite, so she doesn't have to think. But she can't. And she can't bring herself to be broken on JD right now, because he's broken, and she feels so amazingly guilty that she can't be there for him, but it hurts too much

However, he stops worrying about that momentarily when he sees April. He's been hoping to see here since he got here.
"April!" he says, walking over with a bright smile, all oblivious cheerfulness. "The last time I saw you I was a different man."
He hasn't noticed the tears yet for he is the lonely dumbass. Give him a minute.

And then she gets it. Because that grin... it changes with the face, but it's always the same grin, always the same twinkle in his eye.
She forces a weak smile. "Doctor."
The one person who could make her feel better right now, short of Ben coming back. This is good.

He takes a seat near her - and then he realizes there's something wrong. The Doctor is very perceptive. Or something.
"Did something happen?"

Sighs, and curls in on herself tighter. "A... a friend of mine died this morning." A very close friend. That should be obvious even to the lonely dumbass.

He frowns a little. "Oh." He leans toward her, looking worried. "I'm sorry."
The Doctor's really not good at death and grieving. His best coping mechanism is "hey, let's go travel to some planet far away and pretend this never happened." If she's not careful, he'll offer to take her along somewhere any minute now.

But for now, she just scoots closer to him and leans against him a little.
She needs contact when she's upset. She's a very tactile person, and she had barely any positive physical contact until she was 18. It's a needy thing.
"JD... JD feels really guilty. He couldn't save Ben, and..." she sighs a little. I can't do anything to make it better. And Ben's gone."

He wraps an arm around her shoulders, and is silent for a minute as he thinks. The Doctor? Really bad at grief.
So it's not entirely surprising that the next thing he says is, "Do you want to go somewhere? Anywhere in the universe you want. It's about time we went on a trip together again, don't you think?"

On the other hand, if she can't drink, this seems like a good distraction.
"Yeah," she says with a faint smile. "Yeah, I think I would. It's way past time."

Well, Jack likes everyone, and the Doctor sometimes just assumes Rose shares his opinions about people because she's his companion, why wouldn't she, but... Oh, whatever. It'll be fun.

Quickly, she thinks a note to JD. I'm with the Doctor. I'm safe. I'll be back soon. I love you. -April
