He thought it was just a drumbeat at first, louder than the rest, but it was only appropriate to the moment, wasn't it?

And then came pain. Realization. Lucy, with the gun in her hand, that clever little bitch.

He stumbled. He fell. The drumbeat rose in his ears, faster, louder, in time with the beating of his hearts.

The Doctor's tears on his face, the shouting, the pathetic pleas...

"Will it stop, Doctor? The drumming? Will it stop?"

The drumbeat rose - and then stopped, lapsing into blessed silence.

The Master finds himself standing at the door of the Inn, looking around in slow suspicion. He doesn't recognize this place, he doesn't remember how he'd gotten here... And he certainly did not regenerate, so he shouldn't be alive now.

He studies the lobby of the Inn a moment longer. Definitely not the Valiant, or Downing Street... If it's the Doctor's TARDIS, he'll find a gun and shoot himself. Of course, it doesn't look like the TARDIS he remembers, but there's always the possibility it's been remodeled since he last saw it...

Here stands the former lord and Master of Earth, contemplating his death, and for once in his long, long life, without the sound of drums in his head.
