Multipup Post - Silver, letters, and Russian literature

Angua stalks into the Inn and slams the door behind her - not terribly violently, but just enough to make it clear she's not having the best of days. She walks right through the Inn proper to the back door, yanks it open as well, and steps outside, taking a deep breath in the open air. Fresh air - and a little space - are just what she needs. Molokov comes down the stairs, hair still slightly damp from the shower. He sees Walter and smiles. The smile grows wider as he draws closer and sees the book his counterpart is reading.

"Hello, Walter," he says in Russian.

Walter glances over to Molokov and grins. "Hello, Alexander." Also in Russian, because he knows it will make Molokov happy.

It is such a little thing, but yes, hearing his native language from Walter's lips does make Molokov very happy.

He sits in a chair next to Walter and leans back with a sigh. "What are you reading?"

"Pushkin," Walter says, his eyes fixed on Molokov, smile unwavering. It's not like he doesn't see him quite often lately, in the Inn, but every time they're together, he still finds it very hard to stop smiling. After all, in Walter's line of work, relationships tend not to last long. He might as well enjoy it while he can. "Kapitanskaya Dochka."

"A very good choice," Molokov answers. If they were alone, Molokov would have dared a kiss. As it were, the brief brush of his fingers against Walter's arms was risk enough.

Walter shivered faintly as Molokov touched him, but showed no more reaction than that. "Yes, I thought I should catch up on my Russian literature. I'm terribly behind, you know."

He actually manages that with a straight face. There are many things CIA training is good for. Teasing with a straight face is just one of the more fun ones.

Molokov's eyes are very amused but he keeps his expression neutral. "You are behind? For shame, Mr. de Courcey."

"Well, I've had to spend so long learning the history of chess, I think I can be forgiven," Walter says, rolling his eyes a little.

Molokov thinks up a glass of vodka for himself and, after a slight hesitation, a glass of scotch for Walter.

"That changes everything, of course." Molokov thinks he will never be able to wipe the rules of chess from his mind. He has tried, after all. It hasn't worked yet.

Walter takes the scotch with a grateful smile, murmuring a thank you. "It would, yes," he says with a rueful smile. "You only had to... immerse yourself in chess for a little while. For me, it was... Christ, five years."

"Something truly worth of the Order of Lenin." Molokov may or may not be serious. The Narration can't quite tell.

Walter smirks a little and takes a drink of his scotch to cover it. "I appreciate the thought, Mr. Molokov, but I believe my government might take offense to that."

"Not even in the spirit of detente?"

"Perhaps if I put it that way, but it would be a hard sell. And they'd be convinced for years I was selling state secrets to the Soviets."

He takes a sip of his vodka. Walter is right, of course, but he indulges himself and imagines the scene anyway. And possibly the private celebration afterwards, but that's neither here or there at the moment.

"It's just as well, perhaps."

"Just as well?" Walter asks with a raise of his eyebrow. He's a little curious about that comment, and for once not sure how to interpret it. Or the expression on Molokov's face.

That's fairly rare for Walter.
