[INTROSPECTION] Wearing The Single Badge Loud And Proud

Apr 14, 2011 20:22

It's not as dark as I thought it was going to be. Black Day seems like a rather morose name for Single Awareness Day. It does, as Carrie Bradshaw once said, feel like we're equating singlehood with being a leper.

I've been single for 22 years. Yes, I've been single my entire life. "남자친구를 없어" (I have no boyfriend) was my answer to my Korean teacher's proddings last month. That time I was able say it without a twinge of bitterness.

I've stopped overanalyzing my status. I've stopped worrying about when I'm going to meet the one (and if you talk to Dan Savage, he'd say there is no such person as the one anyway). I hasn't happened yet and I'm not going to spend my days wondering why it hasn't.

I've been crippled by the fear before of being alone that I forgot that I've gotten to do so much (and am continuing to do so much because I have the freedom to do so). Not that I'm discounting being a couple but it's just not here yet.

So here's to all of you my single friends. Sorry you couples, it's our day today. Happy Black Day! Wear that badge proud.
