Lucius always looked good, but there were some nights when "good" was a dreary and totally inadequate descriptor. Now, for instance, he was resplendent. He was perfection personified, dressed in rich velvet robes so black that it reflected as shadowless blue in certain lights, trimmed with silver. Matching silver accents were twined throughout his hair, which Draco had plaited for him earlier that evening. Lucius would never claim actually to enjoy his son's fussing, but the fact that he allowed it and sublty encouraged Draco to brush and plait his hair spoke more than words ever could ( ... )

As he'd laid out the formal robes he'd bought for Harry in rich ruby brocade with chasing phoenix and dragon embroidery that fled in spiraling circles over the back and to Harry's sleeves, Draco knew that he would need to step up his dress for the night. He was tempted to wear his forest green robes to align himself with his old house, but then he decided that would be entirely too predictable. In fact, black seemed trite, and the purple seemed a bit much, somehow ( ... )

Lucius shot Harry a disdainful sneer, and then nodded at Draco. "Indeed. I believe this evening's performance is a selection from different operas, to begin the touring season."

Nodding toward a passing server, Lucius said, "Would you care to take our seats or shall we see if the house champagne is as pitiful as last year's offering?" Not that he expected Potter to be able to tell the difference between good champagne and goat's piss, mind you...

"How did that moisturizer work out for you, father? I don't believe you ever told me," he said, his voice sugary sweet as he grinned. He didn't care for the way that his father was sneering at his Harry and he was more than willing to make his point as viciously as a Malfoy could.

He rubbed his hand over Harry's back to reassure him. He was quite pleased that Harry was willing to come with him and he'd made many, many naughty promises to keep him happy with going with it. "We could give the champagne a try. I learned a vintaging charm since last year, so even if it is dreadful, it can be made better."

Lucius had been instantly suspicious of the Ben Gay that Draco had sent to him. He had been right to do so as well. Airily, he said, "Pure Slytherin that you are, I decided to try your gift out on a house elf first. I have never had a house elf beg me to give it clothes before."

One eyebrow raising, Lucius said, "Did you?" Summoning three glasses of champagne, he plucked one out of the air. "Please, by all means." He was both interested and proud that his son had picked up such magic. Tasting his champagne, he knew that his expression showed exactly what he thought of it, which wasn't much.

"Slytherin that I am, are you sure you should trust anything I charm?" he asked, perking his brow back at his father as he leaned against Harry. Knowing Harry didn't really care for wine, he charmed it to butterbeer for him and then tapped his own wand to his champagne and took a sip.

"Mmm... want some?" he asked, holding out the flute he'd just sipped from, pulling it back as his father reached for it, smirking playfully before he let him have it.

"Mmmm," Lucius agreed. "That would be why you shall be imbibing yours first."

He still wanted to set fire to Potter's hair, just for fun, but he snatched the flute way from Draco anyway, tasting it carefully. He allowed several long seconds to drag by before nodding solemnly. "Acceptably improved," he said at last. "An interesting and useful trick you have learned. Where did you--"

A magnified glockenspiel sounded through the foyer, followed by a pert woman's voice announcing, "Ladies and gentleman, please take your seats. The performance will begin in five minutes. Five minutes to curtain. Thank you."

"There was an article in 'Witches Weekly' about how to entertain on a budget that had special charms for perking up regular wines and champagnes into something of a better vintage. Granted, I would never serve my guests something lesser, but given the taste level of some of our new mutual friends... it's been a handy charm to know."

Of course, most of Harry's friends just let them bring the wine so it didn't come up much, but it was a very useful charm to know. There were loads of interesting cleaning tips in there as well. And, as he'd lately discovered, tips for sewing charms, which he was greedily reading up on.

"Ah. So... let us head on up," he said as he headed up the stairs to take them up to the balcony box.

Not commenting on the calibre of Potter's friends, or their wine, Lucius led the way to their box. It took a great deal of self-restraint to hold his tongue on these matters but...

Well.

Lucius wasn't used to making sacrifices, but he was more accustomed to a life that included Draco than one without the boy. And if that meant only trying to have Potter killed outside of Draco's hearing, he supposed he could suck it up. Not that he would ever tell Draco any of this, of course. It had occurred to him one day not long after that last horrible period of hallucination and mindlessness.

Lucius chose a comfortable red chair at the front of the box and sat down, not bothering to see where Potter chose to sit.

Since Lucius took the front spot and Harry sat further back, Draco waited for Harry to sit and then lowered his arse over him, wriggling a little for a fun little lap dance before he took the spot next to him and took his hand.

Draco loved the way Harry looked when he dressed up like this. Even if he was wearing his flip flops under the floor-length robes, it meant a lot that Harry had made such an effort. He'd strategically planned to meet Harry at the Malfoy Manor, as he likely wouldn't have made it out the door had he seen Harry looking every inch the proper wizard like this.

"You look amazing. I don't know if I'll last the whole night without snogging you senseless. I might need to visit the loo with you later," he whispered to Harry.

Then he leaned forward and asked his father, "So, did you pick up a programme?"

Harry kept his mouth squeezed tightly shut through most of the trip from Malfoy Manor to the Opera House, having to restrain himself from attempting to hex Lucius' sneer right off. He kept reminding himself that he was doing this for Draco, and that was reason enough to keep quiet and not start any fights. Though really, why Draco was playing with his father's hair when Harry had arrived remained a mystery to him ( ... )

The idea of snogging Harry all night was always appealing, but he didn't really want to give the whole of the Wizarding world a free show. They didn't deserve that. He slipped his hand into Harry's and rested his head on his shoulder, though. He sighed happily at having Harry with him and kissed his cheek.

"Maybe at intermission I'll give you a little taste of what you'll get for being so good tonight. You're doing so well," he whispered before nipping his lobe. "I'm very proud of you. You look amazing, you know. I wish I could convince you to dress like this all of the time."

He nuzzled the side of his face, feeling a little whiny that he couldn't have a proper snog now, especially since he'd been too nauseated that morning for them to have their normal morning ritual in the shower before work took Harry away. He felt fine now, of course, but he missed their closeness that morning.

"Let's hope intermission comes early." He was grinning and wishing for the opera to start. The sooner it began, the closer they would be to intermission. "I'm trying," he admitted. "I just want you to have a pleasant evening." He checked that Lucius wasn't watching and leaned in to press a soft kiss to Draco's forehead. "Thank you."

"Not nearly as good as you do," Harry said, smiling appreciatively at Draco. He always knew just what to wear to make him look perfect, and Harry was always happy to enjoy the results. "I'll dress like this for you when we're alone, if you want." It wasn't as good an offer as wearing it out daily, but Harry simply couldn't agree to that. A private show now and again? That he could manage.

He leaned his head against Draco's, curling in to his warmth. It felt good to be so close to him even if Lucius was sitting just in front them. "How are you feeling?" Harry asked, brushing a strand of hair away from Draco's face.

"Really? You'd wear this for me?" he asked, snuggling in closer, trying to get as close to him as he could, relishing the warmth and his distinctive smell when he was all clean and the dab of cologne he wore when he was dressing to impress. Draco loved that smell the best.

"Oh, you," he said, tilting his head up to kiss Harry's neck softly. He loved compliments, especially from Harry. "Do you really like this robe? It's a little old fashioned but I liked the color, anyway. I've had it a while. I probably should've bought a new robe for this but... well... shopping's less fun without my dressing room buddy."

He squeezed his eyes closed and rubbed his head against Harry's hand and sighed happily. "I'm feeling much better. I just did some reading in the living room and felt better after a while. Something must not have settled right last night."

The lights started to dim and the show began. "Looks like your wish is their command, hm? Intermission here we come."

"Of course," Harry said, with a slight shrug. It wasn't terribly hard to put on something nice that Draco would appreciate. And really, Draco had done well with these - they even managed to be comfortable and not stifling ( ... )

Neville finally found Violet and her parents, or rather, they found him; and they made their way through the crush of well-heeled Wizarding Society to their seats. Neville was rather surprised at the number of people his own age in attendance.

Once seated, Neville looked around at the box seats, looking for more people he recognized. He didn't have to look hard before his gaze fell on the box belonging to the Malfoys. He hid a small shudder when he saw that Lucius was there, and nearby...

Waiting until Draco's father wasn't looking, he waved up to Harry and Draco. He wasn't sure they had seen him. Maybe he'd visit the box at intermission.
