Daphne flipped the lock on her door closed, smiling when she heard the telling snick. A deadbolt wouldn't protect against someone who truly wanted to enter, of course - she had wards to help against that - but in muggle London it offered at least a small measure of security.
The flat was smaller than she was used to, but the view of the river, which Daphne could see from the small terrace of both levels, made the size worth it.
Setting down her shopping bags near the stairs, Daphne moved to the kitchen to pour herself a glass of Calvados. Cupping the brandy glass easily, if not familiarly, in one hand, Daphne made her way upstairs, her thoughts straying to recent - and even not-so recent - events.
The war was over, at least to her mind. The minds of others, however, were what still worried her at times. Were there still people who wanted her silenced? A sobering thought, certainly, but one that Daphne didn't want controling her life any longer.
Daphne slid the door of the terrace open, and then closed once more behind her as she moved to take a seat on the chaise there. The August air was warm, but not uncomfortably so. Better, certainly, than the humidity she'd found in France weeks before... She had gone back, though this time not in retreat but to settle and finish things. Her mother's estate had needed sorting, a task that Daphne had put off as she'd worked through her illness and the problems with her cousins and her father's estate. Daphne had kept few of her parents' things - a few pieces of jewelry, some furnishings. What she had retained was all at her flat - the flat secured with the profits of the sales of the items she hadn't wanted. The items made the space familiar, but it still wasn't quite home.
Sipping the apple brandy, Daphne made yet another list in her head. She knew she should send owls to a few people - she probably owed explanations of nothing else. There was much to be done.
